Is it just me or do most modern country songs just seem like lists...

...of things the singer likes or did that day?

It's unbearable.

Country music used to have actual songs with meaningful lyrics that just so happened to have a slide guitar and singer with an accent.

Modern country is perhaps the worst genre of music and has been for over 20 years. It is beyond formulaic at this point.

My buddy showed me a video of a 5 song mashup a few years back that all shared the same chord progressions and melodies to the point where the lyrics could just be swapped and you couldn't tell. It's been posted here before

Agreed. Sturgill, Stapleton and the other "saviors" are no different than Luke Bryan & Toby Keith.

Why did Ray Charles love (real) country music? Because of the stories. These kids don't have any stories to tell, so they get processed by the labels to produce this repetitive, formulaic (worse than hip-hop) dreck.

Remember when country music was three chords and the truth? Good times.

Although you could make a song out that. Ah-la Kinky Friedman perhaps.

It's mandatory these days that a great country song have a reference to "sweet tea."

It’s funny to me how everyone hates New/bro country but more and more of it gets played on radio every day along with biggest stars being them.

Seems like if everyone hated it like they say they do it wouldn’t be on the radio

But Midland and John Pardi might be a start in the right direction

What most here don't realize is that there's no right or wrong direction. If you like it, listen to it, enjoy it and don't worry about what someone else might thinks about it.

I just spent the entire week working in a client's office that played a local country music station on their PA all day. I was suicidal one hour after getting there Monday morning. So awful. Every male singer sounded exactly the same.
