Love them or hate them, if you’re going off longevity, albums sold, and popularity, you have to mention Aerosmith. They have number one hits in four decades.

They are definitely top three

Never been an Aerosmith fan, but I agree they are in the conversation.

Eagles
Van Halen
Beach Boys
Aerosmith
Allman Brothers
Lynyrd Skynyrd
REM

There are a lot to choose from. There is no right answer.

There it is…. America has had some great great bands, but the eagles top them all. But I have zero problem with people thinking another band should be at the top.

Also CCR. Soundtrack of my days when I wore a younger man's clothes.

Prob this.

I also like Gregg, Dickey and Warren's solo stuff.

And then you have some spin offs like gov't mule, Tedeschi trucks band and the Allman betts band, sea level.

Plus the early shite like allman joys and hour glass.

I'm tempted to say The Beatles, because it took them to re-purpose American music and shine it back on us in a huge way.

But if we're being TECHNICAL, then it seems the answer has to be CCR. Not only is the depth of their catalogue great (between just the 2 20-song Greatest Hits, at least 33 of them are good/great, including at least 10 all-timers), but they ALSO competed successfully with The Beatles (admittedly, at the very end of the run, but still). Fogerty had the goods, even when having the goods meant you had to be better than great.

Definitely top 5 and probably my number 1. I would also throw Skynyrd in the mix along with Grand Funk, Creedence, Beach Boys, Van Halen, Metallica, Steely Dan, The Doors.

The "greatest American band" can't be responsible for the worst song ever recorded (Dude Looks Like a Lady). In fact, the majority of their post 70's catalog is total shite. Sobriety really fricked those guys up.

I would add Dave Mathews Band and at least one of the Seattle bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam or Soundgarden to the conversation. It’s all personal preference.

For me, it’s the ABB
All great players with Greg’s amazing vocals.
And a perfect fusion of blues, rock and even a little jazz
WAAY more than a “southern rock band”.
