It seems it used to be almost universally acknowledged the big 5 were Beatles, Stones, LZ, Floyd, and The Who in some order.

Universally acknowledged by who?

I don't think the 5 best bands in history were all British. Not even close.

Solid top 5

And great point about Queen.

I am aware that them in my top 10 is based on personal preference

But - their early stuff really is great.

Solid list too.

Fleetwood Mac with Lyndsey and Stevie was so great.

And The Band is so underrated.

Fun fact - I saw Fleetwood Mac on my 50th birthday and Sir Paul in Paris the week of my 60th.

No ABB or Grateful Dead?

I don’t have too much issue with the list. I’m not sure Radiohead belongs. Journey? Ehh …. Heart in the top 30? RATM > GNR is

I’d switch some of the rankings, but it’s a decent list for a subjective topic.

I'm never going to understand the "greatness" of Queen. I just don't get it. And them ahead of Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones is just mentally handicapped

My question is was defines greatest?!?! If the question refers to most talented… than there are some not even mentioned and a lot that never should have been mentioned even if they were very popular

Will almost certainly never purge out all subjectivity but some criteria to consider which are inherently subjective as well and overlap (no order and no weighting given):

Popularity
Artistry
Technical acumen
Musical excellence
Innovation and originality
All around talent

Holistically, hard to disagree that any of the 30 don't belong in the top 30, but order is debatable.

Metallica and Van Halen don’t belong here

While this list, like most others, is purely subjective, it's hard to argue either of these bands don't belong in the top 10, regardless of your personal preferences. Both, in their own way, revolutionized their respective genres in addition to being among the highest grossing bands of their time.

I’ve come to really appreciate how bad Queen was. Of course they had some good songs and Brian May is a great guitarist but their music was juvenile idiotic nonsense.

Black Sabbath is 12, but they should be ahead of Queen, Metallica, ACDC and Van Halen who are ahead of them. Lot of respect for the metal bands since they had Iron Maiden and Aerosmith too.

The Beach Boys should be #2, and the Beatles #1. Led Zeppelin is a one trick pony....... hard rock.

Aerosmith at 30? I think they are top 10 and maybe 5. They adjusted with the times. Their 70's sound is different from the '80's sound. Plus they stayed together as a whole. The Beatles pretty much sounded the same, song to song.

this is still the worst take I've ever seen on any topic ever

As stated, the last half of this list is trying way too hard to be inclusive.

Despite the inevitable backlash this will receive, primarily because of their social/political crap, I would put U2 in the top 10 over The Eagles and I don’t think it’s even a stretch based on numerous factors.

List lost me with Rage.

I would kick Nirvana out as well. While I can see an argument for them, I believe they get more credit than they deserve. They were just anointed the face of a musical movement that was really much larger than them.

Heart…one for the ladies I guess.

Van Halen hate is weird and rather pretentious.
