I saw them in several very small venues before they got radio play
i got one better. i grew up with Joel Rundell and he was the closest thing to Spicoli i ever knew
i was in 7th grade and we were having our 'end of year' party at Jack Hayes in 1979 and he walked in wearing checkered vans and holding a record player and a B52s album and put on "Rock Lobster" and that blew my mind. I was still listening to The BeeGees and ELO.
I knew he was built different then.

Saw grimes play a show at red star bar in BR to about 20 people. just her, a keyboard and computer.
Isbell many times from 2005-2010 with dbt and 400 unit. also solo at the circle bar in 2009 with about 25 people in attendance. no stage. just him and an acoustic set up on the floor. he had another guitar player with him too.

Saw the revivalists at caliente or whatever it was called in 2009/2010. Back when that country baw used to play every Wednesday on the patio.
Might have been 30 people eating when they started. Closer to 10-15 when they ended. Got to talk to David shaw for a few when they were packing up. Awesome dude and you could tell they were way more than normal college band
Also, pretty lights in Tuscaloosa at the SAE band hall for the lsu bama game in 2009. Remember the rumor was he was booked for 8-10k but by the time he took the stage he was getting 35-40k for bookings.

I saw Todd Snider a few times in the late ‘80’s when he was living in Memphis. He’d show up and play his gigs barefooted at the Daily Planet.

Goo Goo Dolls and No Doubt were not nobodies at the time, but they were still sort of up and coming when Bush really started taking off. I saw them both open for Bush at the Cajundome way back in the day.

Hootie and the Blowfish used to play at a little bar (that was a converted drug store) in Johnson City, TN back in the early 90s (probably '91-92 timeframe) well before Cracked Rear View came out.
Kenny Chesney used to play in the basement of the ETSU Lambda Chi house around the same time. He graduated in '90, but would still come by every now and then to play at their house, and always had a nice draw...even before anyone outside of Johnson City had heard of him.

closest I've got is New Years Eve 2015.
Chris Stapleton played before Kings of Leon and it was right when he was about to blow up

not a band but Keith Urban. Was at a festival of sorts at The Woodlands - I think in 1993. Dwight Yoakam was the headliner. In the afternoon I went to grab a beer at the concession stand and they had a small stage right near it. Just me and my beer and Keith Urban and his band.

I don’t know that they ever got big, but there were an impressive number of groups that went through Thou’s house parties in Broadmoore before they got big.
I saw an unknown Linkin Park open for Kottonmouth Kings.
I saw 30 Seconds to Mars headline upstairs at House of Blues for less than 30 people. It’s before you were allowed to acknowledge it was Jared Leto’s band.
