Bands that turned generic

A lot of these bands had good original music, but turned generic. Their music turned into a job, just crunch out the next thing that will sell, rather than originality. My list is:
Maroon 5 (probably most of the group)
Aerosmith
U2
RHCP towards end
Coldplay
Dave Matthews Band
Nickelback

I agree with your list and not trying to argue but I feel like a lot of bands run out of material and the record labels force them to get a record out while they are still hot. They struggle to write material quickly and end up having different writers and such and the entire thing is just different.
Makes me appreciate the longevity of some bands.

RHCP doesn't fit this description. Yes, they changed their sound after Mother's Milk, but a lot of that was due to John, who is the exact opposite of "generic." They created a unique sound that is unmistakable as any other band. All their albums have been quality since BSSM IMO, even though the ones with Josh were not as good. But that wasn't because they were just trying to crank out another album. It was due, again, to John, or the lack of his presence.
Go to a RHCP show today. You cannot leave that show and think "these guys are just phoning it in" for another paycheck. They are all in their 60's outside of John, and they put more energy into their shows than just about anybody.

AC/DC got to be at the top of the list. They made the formula with Back in Black and haven’t strayed from it since.

Not sure if you've heard Unlimited Love or Return of The Dream Canteen, but neither of those albums are generic.

Angus Young: "I'm sick to death of people saying we've made 11 albums that sound exactly the same. In fact, we've made 12 albums that sound exactly the same"
Self awareness is awesome

I don't know about generic, but three of my favorite bands changed enough for me to really not care about them anymore:
The Police
The Cars
REM

Dear God, yes. Their first two (and kinda three) albums were staples of my listening then.

This is the first band I thought of. They belong at the top of this list.
Every album they’ve released sine St. Anger could’ve been written by A.I..

Totally disagree. Inamorata, You Must Burn, Too Far Gone, Room of Mirrors.
Nothing generic about their new release.

We got to see them in Mile High Stadium in the rain in 2022.
I hadn't seen them in years but you're right, it was non-stop energy the whole show. Even when they layed back and jammed, you could tell they were all completely into it.

None of Metallica's music is generic. Even St Anger, as bad as it is, is still original.

Chicago after the death of Terry Kath
The 80's version of the band was God awful

quote:U2 was always generic but I’m surprised two people have said REM…not at all the same band after “HiFi” but they lost a member who wrote quite a bit of the music and was a huge part of their sound. None of the latter albums compare favorably but I’m not sure they are generic…they still sound like REM the songs just aren’t as good
REM U2

As a lover of ZZ Top's 70's work I nominate them as time moved forward.
