I mean I like what he’s doing, but somethings missing from his music. He’s missing the thing that merle, hank jr, Waylon, Skynrd, yoakam, strait, Jackson and George Jones had. He doesn’t tell his story through his songs the way they did. I don’t think he means what he sings about.

If I have to listen to new country I’d much rather Eric Church. I think he’s bad arse.

Hahaha, SMH, don't know where to start with this shitpile of a thread.

Oh and it's Skynyrd. And they aren't in the same category as the others you listed. Those are the first two things wrong with this thread. There are many more.

I like Stapleton. His music bores me, but more classic country does bore me. I like it fine, I just don't really listen to it very often.

I prefer him to Sturgill, FWIW, since they get lumped in together so often.

Half of those you listed wrote few or none of their songs. A lot of "their story " was marketing

So he wears sunglasses.....I get it, it’s kinda silly, but it’s his thing. But the dude has an unquestionable passion for music and puts on a hell of a concert.

As for Stapleton, traveler was a masterpiece....the “From A Room” albums were hit or miss. The two albums he made with the steeldrivers were incredible. Bottom line is I’d rather listen to a shitty Stapleton song than whatever bubble gum pop country is getting pushed on radio.

I really really love his bluesy songs like I Was Wrong and Death Row

and I do enjoy his more traditional country style songs but there's a decent chunk of stuff that doesn't do it for me.

That said, I'm totally seeing him live later this year

I like Outlaw State of Mind, but most of Stapleton's songs all sound the same.

I like both
I try to like Stergil, but his voice makes me laugh. Everytime I hear him, it sounds like Boomhaur cut an outlaw country record

Got any other universally lauded musical legends that this guy just doesn't quite stack up to?

It's like your son coming home from school with straight A's on his report card and saying "You're no Albert Einstein kid. I'm thoroughly unimpressed."

Hate on, but he puts on one hell of a show. I saw him last year, and he played for damn near 3 hours, with about a 15 minute break in the middle. Didn't even have an opening act.

I get bored with CS. I find most of his stuff is too slow. And I wanted to like him as I am a big fan of the “outlaw country” of yesteryear. It just doesn’t do it for me...I do enjoy Sturgill
