Alice in Chains is back on the charts—with a song recorded more than 30 years ago with late lead singer Layne Staley. The 1994 song "Nutshell" re-entered Billboard's Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart at No. 25 for the week of June 8, 2026, marking its 34th overall week on the chart.

Why now I wonder?

Awesome song. One of my favorites of theirs. I wonder if it was used on a soundtrack of some sort.

I will continue to say the Layne Staley version of Alice in Chains is one of my favorite bands ever. Nutshell being one of their best songs and their Unplugged version being one of the best.

If I’m not mistaken, it wasn’t even a single off of Jar of Flies. It just developed a cult following

Correct. The MTV Unplugged version has gone everywhere on social media/YouTube on “reaction” channels because of how powerful it is. You are basically watching a man in the process of dying & this was the opening song & the lyrical content matches what Layne is going through with his drug addiction. The back story behind AIC’s MTV Unplugged is amazing. They weren’t even sure Layne would physically be able to perform & he killed it. It’s legendary.

And he is physically struggling in the performance. His voice is poor (by his standards) with breaking and just out of breath. It adds to the performance now that we know what we know of that moment in their lives.

I had Jar of Flies when it was originally released. And I still watch that Unplugged at least once a week.

Is there an AIC Unplugged thread here every other week? Seems like it.

I found it on Vinyl at a random arse music store in Utah back in November.
wasn't even where it was supposed to be (was in like the "W" section or something like that).

Yes it followed me home.

This song is what got me into AIC. I bought the Best of the Box album and then found the unplugged performance and fell in love.

He did fix right before the show. It was a business decision. He wasn't stoned, but fixed enough to function.

Sad that such talent was lost to heroin.

This. It's how younger folks find out about music these days, for whatever reason. I'm 42, plumber. Guys I work with are mid 20s-early 30s mostly.

Can't tell you how many songs Ive either played or they've stated they heard it on TikTok. On the one hand, it's insufferable. On the other hand, at least they're listening to good music. One of them came in last week with Primus. I felt like a proud father.

I think this cover is great.
Doesn't touch the original though...

It's one of the very few songs that I can sort of play.
