There is no denying this.

With my luck, I’d be one of the people who remembered but couldn’t sing.

Yep. The Beatles changed the paradigm for pop music and rock acts.

Loved the idea. The execution not so much. Love that it showcased the music of my all time favorite band. Didn't really like the lead. Lily was hot as usual. the friends were kind of funny.

i enjoyed the song writing challenge with sheeran. And his disappointment at losing.

I don't get why he would put up with that corporate manage chick. You have the entire library of the greatest band in history at your disposal and you let this bitch treat you like garbage?

and "Hey Dude" ?

That was funny

But overall I liked the movie and I went to see it expecting what was in it. So I was not disappointed.

The music made the movie and songs like Let It Be and others people mentioned would be a hit today. Its not like stars have not tried to sing them again. I also think part of the premise of the movie as to why the songs would be so well received is the music had meaning versus the top 40 crap played now. Very few songs today have any soul to them.

I really enjoyed this one. Watched it a few weeks back. It's not overly great, but definitely enjoyable for me.

I loved the Let It Be scene with his parents. That was great. Imagine having songs like these in your mind but people not taking you seriously at first.

I also really liked how they mixed in the google searches throughout the movie every time something would pop up into his mind and he tried to search it out. That was kinda cool.

I agree that the ending seemed a little weird and rushed. But all in all, it was a nice little movie that I'll definitely watch again.

And I think some people in this thread are missing the point a little. It's not that "The Beatles" would be as popular today as they were back then. It's about the music. And it doesn't mean that all of their songs would be as popular as they were back then. But some of their songs are so good that it is kinda undeniable that they would not be massive hits today in the hands of the right artists.

the look on the friends' faces when he first played Yesterday.

The look on Sheeran's face when he played Long and Winding Road.

Overall the look on peoples' faces when they were hearing these songs for the first time.

Saw that hbo had the movie yesterday on it so I decided to check it out because the father in law was talking about the movie. Never really listened to the beetles before, but damn this was a pretty good movie. It was a nice and easy watch and I enjoyed it.

But I couldn’t stand kate McKinnon............... then again I can’t stand her in anything she’s in

watched this again last night. Mostly for the music. Had the same reaction as the first time. I love the idea of the movie. Wasn't crazy about the lead guy. Lily was hot as usual.

maybe it was just part of the character's personality.
But, i just can't see a person with the entire library of one of inf not the best bands in history at his disposal yet, he lets some hollywood big wigs push him around.
would have been great to see him say "frick that" i'm doing this my way.

I found the dialogue cheesy and would have liked more songs or at least a couple full length songs

Even if it wasn't about the Beatles, which I like, I would have enjoyed it just for the above.

It seems like this "type" of movie was so common 10 years ago (semi-romcom, modern, relatable setting, fairly mindless but not too stupid, not comic/sci-fi, etc.) and now they're quite rare.

Such a good point. I really enjoyed Yesterday. My daughter had just started getting into The Beatles and we saw this in the theater. I think I'll buy the blu-ray just to have it for a re-watch.

4. I'm in agreement that the Beatles music would not be #1 hits today. Not that it wouldn't be popular in some sense, but no way do they see the same level of success. Tastes are so much different now. They might be Coldplay. That's a terrible thought, but true. But they wouldn't be the Beatles as we know them as transcendent artists that changed everything.

this is such a bad take

music today is a derivative of having the Beatles in the past. If there never were The Beatles, music from 1970 to today would be different.

We saw a knockoff version of the Beatles in Oasis, they sold 41 million albums over 18 years (91-09). That is a knockoff of an all time band sold 41 million with us knowing they were a knockoff and we have the original for comparison and consumption.

So with two of the greatest songwriters of all time plus the most successful songwriter of all time in the group, how good would the original be if we never heard them before and they had modern tools to work with?

If you saw the movie you would realize that the production was changed on a lot of the songs to make them sound a bit more current. It was kept the same for some of the more low key songs. So yes, some or all of those songs could have gone to #1 if released today and done the right way.

The wife and I watched this the other day. It was a cute romcom. It kinda reinforced just how good the Beatles really were.

Watched it last night - same here. I echo what I read in several reviews in that the movie's own idea was "under-explored".

Lots of good individual bits, but it just seemed somewhat poorly written overall.

Yeah, no kidding. What exactly did he need the record label for when Sheeran's informal promotion alone would have gotten him to billions on youtube which could have easily been monetized?

The dopey friend and the backstage helper guy were also 2 dimensional oafs at best.

I do find the thought experiment at core to be very interesting: if someone could debut these songs today, completely fresh, what would be the best order to introduce them and how would they be received?
