Six years after Walt Disney Co. spent $4 billion to buy a single franchise, “Star Wars” is looking a little less stellar.

Despite being one of the past year’s most successful movies, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has fallen short of Wall Street’s expectations due to a faster-than-expected falloff at the box office, declining toy sales and a poor showing in China.

With $1.3 billion in global box office for “The Last Jedi,” the most of any movie released in 2017 and No. 9 of all time, Disney’s problems are ones other entertainment companies would kill to have. Nonetheless, for a property as valued as “Star Wars,” any sign audiences are losing faith is concerning and could prove costly down the road if the trend continues.

“Disney started off with an incredible touch with Star Wars, but now it’s looking a little less magic,” said B. Riley FBR analyst Barton Crockett.

Mr. Hollis said the box office take for “The Last Jedi” was more front-loaded than he had expected and said the days that holidays fell on the calendar and strong competition from other films, particularly “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” may have impacted its January gross.

Overseas, “The Last Jedi” has grossed close to $700 million, about $180 million more than “Rogue One” but $430 million less than “The Force Awakens.”

The biggest chunk of that shortfall came from China, where “The Last Jedi” has grossed a weak $41 million, just one-third as much as “The Force Awakens” and 41% less than “Rogue One.” Despite aggressive promotional campaigns including pop songs and Stormtroopers on the Great Wall, moviegoers in the world’s most populous nation have proved less interested in Luke, Leia and lightsabers.

Mr. Hollis said the “Last Jedi” China gross was disappointing and said Disney is still “digging into” the reasons and potential solutions.

So let's see....

A) Kill off the most beloved hero in Star Wars lore
B) Kill off the single most compelling bad guy in the "new" trilogy.
C) Undermine the lineage of the main protagonist...which right or wrong had become a big story line coming up to TLJ
D) SJW...all that needs to be said

I'm sure there are more but let's just go with those.

Good. frick Disney. Their handling of this trilogy should be studied in film school as maybe the most perfect example of how to epically fail as a studio.

And this is why you don't hand over a perfect set up to an SJW who resents the morals and characters of Star Wars and let him go nuts.

Is it just me, or does this sound culturally insensitive?

I frankly don't know how the Chinese people feel about the Great Wall - but I'd be a little turned off if they used, say, the Washington Monument for a promotional stunt.

Disney? Culturally insensitive to the Chinese?

It's not like put a Vietnamese girl in the movie thinking all Asians are the same thing and then paired her with a black guy thinking all Chinese love American minorities

Here's the problem with China and Star Wars: They were the evil empire at one point and are still all about control. They aren't taught to be individuals and that you can be anything like Star Wars has been preaching for years. It's the exact opposite. They're taught to be a unit and to shut the frick up when it comes to your place that the massive government has need for you. They can't identify with these characters at all, so they prefer movies with no moral messages since the Chinese as a whole go to the movies to turn their brains off. It's the reason they by far have the shittiest taste in film of any country.

H) Don't put in a plot hole that renders almost every Star Wars plot in the franchise's history pointless.

Somewhere some nameless WB executives are thanking their friends that work at Disney for making people forget their handling of the DCEU.

I know Justice League wasn't amazing but after seeing TLJ (and finally getting around to JL) I left the theater thinking it could have been worse. It wasn't great but at least the creators of JL had some affection for their iconic characters.

They kind of buried the lede but the problem isn't just China.

Even if the Last Jedi matches the Force Awakens in the China take, they're still 350 million short internationally.

Everybody hated it. The only difference is that Americans realized it only after they paid for their tickets.

China doesn't like Star Wars. They just don't. I'm not sure what Disney can do to change it.

I think the biggest problem here is they went into this new trilogy without a vision for the beginning, middle, and end.

The Anthology films have definitely had their issues as well. I'm not sure how Disney lets things get so bad before they step in at the last minute with all the reshoots on Rogue One and Solo.

You're going to try to convince me that Kylo is more compelling that Snoke?

We pretty much already knew everything we need to know about Kylo.

Are they talking about the China audience or Rian Johnson?

The only reason they went and watched it in the first place is because they were wondering what all the fuss was about back in the States. Really the only way you're going to make Star Wars work in China is either wait for anyone who lived under Mao to die in 2 generations or you have to completely get out of the Empire angle. You also need to make it dumber, which at least Rian Johnson got that part right in trying to appeal to the Chinese, but fricked it up when the Asian chick (who is Vietnamese by the way and they have the trained eyes to spot that) making out with a black guy.
