so i finally re-watched Willow. i haven't seen the movie in full in probably 20 year. i tried once in the mid-00s but auto-rejected it as a ripoff of the LOTR. well i can say while there were similarities that was a bit...harsh

first thing, the music in the movie is immortal. amazing main theme and the little things like that little horn when bad guys show up, just great

Kilmer kills it, but sadly, this is the movie that led to his personal downfall (he married Joanne Whalley shortly after this film after meeting her during production). Willow actually was directly responsible for the destruction of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau for this reason (ironically, with a human-animal hybrid scene at that. GET TO WORK CONSPIRACY THEORISTS)

the story is fine but certainly aimed for kids. nothing too complex and that's fine. the one shocking thing is that for a movie clearly focused on kids, HOLY shite did they have some dark shite in it. the Satanic-esque rituals, the pig dogs killing shite, and the rotting corpses in crow's cages. the movie is pretty metal

the world building was great so it's kind of cool they're creating a series in this world. there is a LOT going on in this movie outside of the main plot. tons of politics, war, etc that's referenced and only done off screen.

the set design, costumes, and locations are amazing. it's a cliche but they really don't make em like this anymore (CGI makes it too easy). and on that note, the VFX hold up today and really show you how CGI pollute things. watching a movie like this compared to a random fantasy movie today is mind-blowing. kind of like Conan then v. now.

As I said in the Swiss Family Robinson thread:

Gen X kids weren't pussies. We could handle it.

yea this seemed to be pretty common place in the 80s/early 90s.

also, a big thing with this movie is how SIMPLE the story is

a major, MAJOR issue with movies (across all genres and age targeting) today is overly complex plot that are complicated just to be complicated

outside of some very specific genres (thrillers, procedural mysteries, noir), if your story requires lots of twists, turns, backstabs, and revelations, it's likely not a good story and you're compensating for shitty storytelling skills by using the equivalent of jump scares

Hear, hear.

Know your movie and audience and deliver the story that they want to see on the screen. If I am watching a noir style movie or series (or a parody of one like the great Fallet series on Netflix) than by all means throw in a million plot twists.

If it is a kid's movie give me a story that is simple to follow and moves the film along nicely thank you.

One of my all time favorite movies.

Everything about it is perfect.

True that.

We watched Three Musketeers (Charlie Sheen/Kiefer Sutherland version) last night with the kids and I forgot how much boobilicious cleavage, sexual innuendos, and on screen bloody death there was.

My wife kept giving me a look and I was all “I was 12 when this came out and it was a bit of a kids move at the time.”

Watched the whole movie last weekend with my 10 year old

Holds up

I also posted earlier this week that Disney plus is bringing a Willow sequel series next year. Ron Howard as producer and Warwick Davis to star.

Can’t wait

Willow was one of my favorites as a kid but I’m not sure if my 6 year old is ready for it yet.

Those dogs scared the frick out of me as a kid. Like teenage me would go to the bathroom on that opening sequence.
