Those movies were why the PG13 rating was created. They scared the frick out of you GenX slugs and pissed off your Boomer parents so badly they had to make a new age class for movies.

Watched it this afternoon for the first time in probably 20 years.

It's still badass.

Just did a re-watch. The main theme is truly awesome. Forgot how creepy that sorceress was. Her hand turning to that wood/stone near the end always creeped me out. Mad Martigan’s kill of the General was badass. And yeah it holds up well. It did LOTR before LOTR in cinema. The snow escape is so well done.

for about 3-4 years that was by far the most attempted move in sword fighting with friends

The action theme honestly started playing in my head as I read your post

That should tell you something

Great fricking movie that I enjoyed alot when I was a kid. Crazy to think Davis was only 18 at the time.

if your story requires lots of twists, turns, backstabs, and revelations, it's likely not a good story and you're compensating for shitty storytelling skills by using the equivalent of jump scares

Right - Western fiction storytelling is pretty basic:

1. Status quo ante - answer the basic journalistic questions about your protagonist and then set up the conflict

2. Plot - the path pursued by the protagonist, to either accomplish/protect something, challenge/oppose something, or otherwise pursue a change state (can be as simple as personal improvement/enlightenment or as complex as winning a large scale war), thus engaging in the conflict

3. (simultaneous with 2) - complications, support, betrayal, basically the supporting characters/antagonist actions

4. Climax (peak of the conflict)

5. Resolution

Since this is so predictable, filmmakers try to make their money monkeying around with 3 - which is fine, but one has to be careful, just as with CGI, you don't want to overdo it here because then you will lose the audience when you don't need to. Keep 3 only as complicated as necessary to make it interesting and don't get cute.
