Why is the Glengarry Glenn Ross/Alec Baldwin scene so revered?

He comes in, talks his shite, but provides no explanation on what he does right and why the other guys do wrong.

Here’s the scene....

Because it is an easy way to digest what a high pressure world actually wants from you.

This is probably my favorite Cracked article of all time, and it takes a decent deep dive into it and why it matters.

Alec Baldwin playing the part of an insufferable douche. Quite a stretch.

from the article below:

quote:

As smarter people have pointed out, the genius of that speech is that half of the people who watch it think that the point of the scene is "Wow, what must it be like to have such an a-hole boss?" and the other half think, "frick yes, let's go out and sell some goddamned real estate!"

In the scene Baldwin's character speaks unfiltered truth about the world and you either embrace it and it motivates you or you complain and whine and let the world swallow you up....but here's the thing, most of those leads are utter crap

Margin Call had 2 similar points that I've stolen, but it wasn't as projected and direct. I started writing the first on notepads all around my home office (my girlfriend removed most of them b/c she didn't like them)

1. Why are you necessary?

2. Are you going to be better by being smarter, first, or cheating?

I'm trying to think of a way to do the "why are you necessary?" in a picture-poster to hang in my office

i think a big think people get wrong is due to lack of compartmentalization. this macho talk is about your role and value in a service economy. your quality as a person is something completely different, and very few people get to display their quality as a person through their work (i actually get to do this but even then i still have to justify why i am necessary to these people at the price i demand)

Because everyone who has ever been in high pressure lead driven sales can relate to every character in that scene deeply and immediately.

It is a damn near flawless representation of the sales world and its written and acted perfectly.

Because it is high pressure sales and he is just applying the pressure. I have always believed, no matter what anyone says, you can't teach someone how to sell. They either have it or they don't and this character realizes this and just goes straight to pressure for results.

Yep. That's it.

You can teach someone how to rebuttal, and give them a script of closes, and they can work their way up to "Adequate". But the arse kickers are both born with the gift, and work their arse off to perfect their craft.

If you've ever worked a soul-sucking job for a heartless company that can replace you in a second, you understand the beauty of that scene.

Some of that is insightful, some of that is facile pseudo-wisdom. I haven't read Cracked in years, but I do recall that being a particular idiosyncrasy of David "I ain't actually Asian" Wong. He's not bad at it, but he runs into the same problem as Tyler Durden -- he'll say things with such assurance that they sound like they ought to be true, but don't stand up under real scrutiny.

Which parts are which here? frick you, close.

This is a great quote:

quote:

Saying that you're a nice guy is like a restaurant whose only selling point is that the food doesn't make you sick. You're like a new movie whose title is This Movie Is in English, and its tagline is "The actors are clearly visible."

So is this:

quote:

But here's what everyone needs to know, and what many of you can't accept: "who you are inside" is the metaphorical dirt from which your fruit grows.

You" are nothing but the fruit.
Nobody cares about your dirt. "Who you are inside" is meaningless aside from what it produces for other people.

I want that made into a motivational poster

The scene is great. But the amount of Anti- capitalist knuckleheads who think it’s an accurate representation of American commerce is hilarious. Mamet can write though .
