Why is it so difficult for Hollywood to make good movies?

The tech is there.
There are obviously folks willing to write & direct.
Money is there.
But there seems to be zero original ideas.
It has been at least a decade since I looked forward to seeing a new movie in a theater.
What happened?

Such a lazy take, there are plenty of movies that are going to be released that were delayed or are in the process of being made. I’m not doing your research for you

I don't know for sure, but I suspect the proliferation of your Netflixes and Amazon Studios and the Hulu has something to do with it.

They can make more money by making shite remakes because there is already a fan base established which will introduce it to the younger generation..
Remakes do not appeal to me at all. Unless someone tells me "this one they really did a good job with" I am not watching it just because I liked the original when I was younger

I watched Netflix's "Movies that Made Us".
My take away was "how many great scripts/ideas for movies are rotting in storage units in the Los Angeles area b/c some idiot's ego?"
It blew me away how fickle and whimsical Hollywood can be.

1) Movies cost a lot to make now with all of the CGI and high paid actors. That level of investment means you can't just have a good story, you need a good business case, which often means tying it in to existing Intellectual Property rather than exploring original ideas.
1B) These Business reasons often get people that have very little to do with the story poking their fingers in the pot trying to get their agendas met.
2) The audience is changing and movies today aren't necessarily being aimed at you. This board is full of Gen Xers. Whatever this new generation is called is essentially a new generation like the hippies that have chosen social justice as their primary differentiator. They want to see Gen X's nostaligia "improved"/defiled by forced diversity and SJW agendas. People on this board get all conspiratorial about it like it's a political thing, it's an aiming at a new audience thing.
3) Coronavirus ground production to a halt and it's just now starting to recover. In the last year and a half it feels like they held any halfway decent movie back. It does feel like that's starting to change as production starts getting more normal.

Most of the people in charge at major studios aren’t willing to take financial or creative risk so most of the thinking by writers is dumbed down and they play it safe, which, in turn, leads to shite product. People have also brought this on themselves by not rewarding original movies by going to see them, preferring to wait on indie movies and going to the theater to see splosions instead of going to see both.
It’s like asking why so many bookstores are filled with absolutely shitty Westerns, Murder Mystery and Romance novels. It’s because people’s tastes in art has dwindled to where we enjoy really shitty products. Take my wife for example, enjoys the hell out of The Hunger Games but if I try to get her to read The Secret History or something like that…no dice. She will watch Marvel all day but didn’t like Arrival. And I get on her arse about it
Millions and millions of Americans are very similar and it’s even worse overseas. People enjoy shitty shite they can turn their brains off and not think. Movies like Parasite or Snowpiercer aren’t even on those people’s radars.
ETA: not to say I don’t enjoy my fair share of terrible movies. We all do. But I think there’s a difference between paying for that product in a theater and casually renting it for 3.99 and also knowing going into it that it’s garbage. Take Fast and Furious. I enjoy 5, 6 and 7, knowing good and well the only good movie is Fast Five and the rest are shite. Your casual fan can’t tell the difference and will then spend assloads at the theater to go see F9. People aren’t flocking to see A24’s The Green Knight though we know it will be a much better movie

Did you want him to go through every single movie released in 2019?
There are hundreds of movies made each year these days. You can find pretty much any kind of movie to watch without even getting up off the couch now. It's the same thing when people complain about music. There is more music being made and released now than ever before. If you can't find good stuff in this era it's on you.
Theaters are going to release big arse special effects flicks b/c that's what makes money. Nobody is going to the theaters to see a small indie movie anymore. If it's not a movie full of special effects and crazy action it's just not worth driving out to the theater, spending $15 a ticket, even more on snacks, dealing with jackasses who have phones brighter than the sun who are texting the entire time, and having to miss parts if you need to get up to go to the bathroom. You can watch all that new original stuff at home for a fraction of the cost with zero of the bullshite involved.
I say all that as a person who absolutely prefers to see a movie on the big screen. However, if I'm seeing a movie like Wind River, Midsommar, or Jojo Rabbit? As much as seeing it on a gargantuan screen is a better viewing experience when you add in all that other shite I'm going to watch it at home 100% of the time. Most people have decided to do the same.
The only movies that can still draw big crowds tend to be the kind that do things your typical home theater can't compete with.
