While we are on the subject, what's up with all the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park? They would be dead for millions of years by then.

What’s with all the drug cartel references in the Narcos series on Netflix?

Because the 80s were a much simpler time and the inverse of the dystopian future portrayed in the movie, from which everyone wants to find an escape. I guess they could pick 50s, 60s, 70s pop culture, but those decades lacked the cool stuff the 80s had. In the 80s you had the seeds of the tech revolution, but none of the baggage.

It's not like the marketing for the movie said "Come for the 80's references!"
If that was the reason for them wouldn't it be effective for people to know about them up front?

Read the book which is far superior to the movie.

The CEO of IOI just told the kid that he unwinds after work by “drinking a tab, putting on some Duran Duran and playing Gallega.” I doubt any kid living in 2045 would know about any of those 3 things or give a shite. ETA: it just seems like a shitty attempt to appeal to a bigger audience.
Imagine for a second there was this contest where you get billions of dollars and control of the most important social and entertainment platform on the planet and it depended on figuring out challenges dreamed up by a guy who grew up and loved the 80s. You would think you would study that culture pretty intensely to win it, wouldn't you?
Not everyone does study that hard, just the people really interested in winning the contest.
The book is also pretty poorly written though, so don't expect a masterpiece if you do read it. A lot of it is nostalgia for nostalgia's sake as well.

I thought it was brilliant. I lost count of all the Easter eggs....

How is anyof this “appealing to everyone”?
Would it not be appealing to the fans of 80’s. Either way your posts are dumb and wrong

It just seems pretty lazy that the kids in 2045 have an intense knowledge about stuff in the 80s because the guy who created the Oasis grew up in the 80s.
Just wow. You didn't pay attention at all. Totally over your head. Good grief.

1) Read the book, it was better.
Spoilers!
2) The creator of the Oasis was into 80’s stuff and created the contest.
3) People studied the 80’s stuff for the contest and it became a part of everyday life.
4) There was no GTA or Jonas Brothers or whatever kids are into now. When the Oasis was created, culture kind of froze.
5) Current time sucks so everyone stays lost in the nostalgia and Oasis instead of dealing with real life issues.
How can you not get this?

The love and popularity for the 80s is clearly defined in both the book and the movie. Stupid thread is stupid.

I don't know about far superior, as I enjoyed the movie quite a bit.
I'd say read the book for a completely different story on the same premise. It was amazing just how different the movie was from the book.

The guy in story Halloday, grew up in the 80’s playing Atari and nes and such too

I don’t get it. It’s set in a dystopian future, but the whole movie is littered with 80s nostalgia. Games and shite that would be 60 years old. Hell GTA would be a classic game by then. And main characters car is a deloreon. Do they feel that they have to appeal to everyone?
If you didn't get this, you basically missed the entire plot of the movie.
