Why are there so many 80s references in Ready Player One?

I don’t get it. It’s set in a dystopian future, but the whole movie is littered with 80s nostalgia. Games and shite that would be 60 years old. Hell GTA would be a classic game by then. And main characters car is a deloreon. Do they feel that they have to appeal to everyone?

Well you see there is this thing called a book. It has words and pages and it was written by a guy who grew up in the 80s and they based the movie on it.

This is like asking why there is so much 70s and 80s music in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Ignoring the book for a minute...

Did you actually watch the movie? It clearly talks about how the creator of the Oasis grew up in the 80s.

Not really that’s just a creative choice. It’s more like asking why the GOTG are trying to get the Orb. The 80s references are the story

The CEO of IOI just told the kid that he unwinds after work by “drinking a tab, putting on some Duran Duran and playing Gallega.” I doubt any kid living in 2045 would know about any of those 3 things or give a shite.

ETA: it just seems like a shitty attempt to appeal to a bigger audience.

No it’s not. It’s part of the story. He was a kid during that timeframe. The mix tapes on the Walkman are what he listened to to cope with his mom dying from cancer.

The book explains why the kids in the present have such an intense knowledge of the stuff from the 80s, and since you are strictly talking about the movie, I am going to bow out of this thread.

Your last statement is 100% incorrect though.

It just seems pretty lazy that the kids in 2045 have an intense knowledge about stuff in the 80s because the guy who created the Oasis grew up in the 80s. FWIW, I like the movie, some of it just seems over the top with the bs nostalgia stuff

I haven't seen the movie, but if my calculations are correct, someone born in 1980 would be approximately 60 and five years old in 2045.

Do you not know any old Baby Boomers today who obsess on 60's pop culture or whatever decade they grew up in? Movies, TV shows, and music from the mid-20th Century are still played constantly over a variety of mediums in 2018. It's not all that far fetched.

Let's see, carry the 2, multiply by 4, subtract the denominator and add the square root of 78. Ugh nevermind, that sounds right.

It's directly tied to the entire plot of the story. The guy who built the Oasis grew up through the eighties. He based the entire game of winning the Egg on the eighties. Therefore, everyone got really excited and learned a lot about the eighties.

Wouldn't you learn all you could about something if it meant you could potentially receive a quarter trillion if you succeeded?

Is your comprehension so horrific in other mediums, or just film?

It’s a minor part of the story, it’s similar yes but they could use any music, I think part of the point of RPO, the book, is a criticism of our obsession with pop culture, endless movie, TV show, music video game references etc the 70s 80s is really the peak of that. Both are creative choices of the author/director.

I guess if the OP asking why all the 80s stuff, why is The Godfather about the mafia?
