I've actually enjoyed much more from Disney than Pixar for a few years.

Moana was one of their best by far. Losing to Zootopia was complete and utter trash.

I am kind of with you on this. I know this isn't a popular view, but I find some of the newer Pixar movies a little preachy at times. I sat down and watched Moana with my kids when it came out to rent and was pleasantly surprised.

I really liked Moana - between it, Tangled, and Frozen, I think Disney could have another run similar to the 90s princess movies on their hands if they can keep it up.

Maybe I’m having recency bias, but it’s either my #1 or #2 behind The Lion King.

It's really good. I get a kick out of the whacky grandma. I put it in 2nd tier behind some greats. Somewhere between the 4-8 range.

During the credits they usually have a popular band or singer re-do a couple songs from the movie. "How Far I'll Go" by Alessia Cara is really good.

My all time top 3.

1. Lion King
2. Moana
3. Aladdin

Greatest Disney Song of all time yes even better than the Lion Sleeps Tonight.

I think it's alright. My wife swears it's the greatest movie ever created. The amount of time's I've had to hear that damn soundtrack...

Zootopia and Frozen 2 were extremely preachy as well to be fair. I'm trying to think about which Pixar movie was as preachy as those. Girl power in TS4? Wall-E was preachy but it was actually very anti-big government/socialism.

I still think it’s funny that women hold it, Frozen, and Mad Max:Fury Road up as great movies that feature exceptional independent female protagonists when in reality, the female heroines would have been done 20 minutes into the movie without the male lead, but whatever.

The songs are in the tier with Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Little Mermaid.

Yeah that is the top tier imo and Moana may be the best of them. The music is great.

I do think the story is lacking compared to the other greats though.

The vast majority of the movie is just Moana and Maui alone on the ocean, there isn’t really a villain that we get to know, and there isn’t even really a sidekick, although Hey Hey is as good as the role allows.

Top notch music though.

That can be said for a number of the newer Disney movies. They're still good though.

I don’t think that’s a fair critique of Moana at all. From the beginning the whole premise is that she’s being helped by the ocean, and her job is to find Maui and deliver him to Tefiti to put the heart back.

Her getting Maui to help her is part of her succeeding, she’s a human and he’s a demigod, it was never expected that she should do it alone

ETA: Also he’s killed by Tomatoa without her help

Yeah, the closest thing we get to a true villain song is "Shiny". But that's only a mini-boss level villain in the grand scheme of the movie. I absolutely love the song though.

I really like this top 3. i'd have a different order, but no arguments from me here. Just shy of this list, I'd put Coco.

It's number one for me. The music, characters, story, setting, etc. It just does it for me.

Coco a close second.

She needs him. It’s her journey and she gets nowhere without him. Her journey isn’t complete without him.

He got caught up her problem because he got stuck on an island. His journey was complete the moment he got off that island. If you want to nitpick, you can say it was after he got his Samoan sword back from ole shiny boy, either way, his journey was complete 45 minutes in. He could have dipped and she would have been screwed.
