Melt

It’s just a dumb movie. Explain why it’s interesting? Is there anything relatable in the story? It’s plot is so predictably ridiculous that it’s simply hard to watch.

If that’s a “melt”, so be it. I’m from a generation that’s not embarrassed to express an unpopular opinion, especially when I’m right.

I just see it as a bright and colorful animated movie with incredibly catchy songs. I enjoy the tropical setting.

I also enjoy the theme. The journey of discovering who you are. What is your destiny. Moana makes that journey of self discovery and also discovers the history and destiny of her entire tribe. And maybe people—certainly her people but maybe all people—should travel, explore, see the world, and not be content with only eating coconuts.

List of movies liked on the board that are oh so super relatable, and not ridiculous at all:

Pulp Fiction
The Dark Knight
Batman vs Superman (for some reason)
Fight Club
The original Star Wars Trilogy
Lion King

I was so pissed my uncle killed my royal father, too. So pissed that I developed special mind powers that allowed me to eventually fight my real father with a glowing, humming phallus. Just some real-life shite, ya know?

Your opinion being unpopular doesn't matter, but I'd love to know what's not relatable about struggling to find your purpose and talents in this life. In a kids' movie.

Your version of "being right" is lobbing criticisms of realism at a fantasy story, and formulaic predictability at a family Disney movie. What movie did you think you were watching? Have your kids forced you to watch Moana a hundred times? Are you expressing your resentment toward your family through your anger at this movie?

I watched about half that video and iti was utter nonsense. Maui is an integral part of the movie and Moana needed him to complete her mission. That video acts like he’s the bad guy...

Also wtf is he talking about “all the creatures after the heart are male”. The fricking coconuts are all male??? How would he possibly know that?

Her dad is the village chief, obviously respected by his people and held in regard by her. The ancient tribal leaders in the past that she sees are also male.

I wouldn’t say best. It’s very good though. But it wouldn’t crack the top 10 for me.

Keep melting over your perceived male bashing and feminism of a fricking cartoon.

Umm, yeh

And it honestly has more meaning today than ever. Humans have evolved and become a greater species by willing to take risks, by willing to do more than "just survive". Moana's dad lost this urge. We have always been able to forget about our own mortality in order to make advancements and a better life. He lost his human spirit to move on, to press forward. She found it inside her to do this and evolve her tribe

Today, more than ever, humans are forgetting this. We are so afraid of our own mortality we are letting a virus shut down everything

I mean I dont know what to tell you

The entire point of the movie is you cant let a little fear keep you from being who you are and doing what you were meant to do

If you dont see how that is a good message and applicable today I m not sure what to tell you

It's a great message. I think it's far fetched to tie it to covid 19. I don't believe she was ever afraid of the ocean or the journey (Quite the opposite). She was mostly afraid of disappointing her father and not fitting the mold he envisioned for her.

Pacific Islanders were pioneers and island hoppers. They had to be for resource scarcity.

But her father was

And her fathers fear was so much that he was willing to sacrifice the entire village over his irrational fear

Part of the reason I like this movie so much is that I have been interested in Polynesian culture and voyaging for years before it came out. They actually did stop voyaging for about 2,000 years after they reached Fiji and Samoa. They had some really interesting navigation maps and techniques.

Did anyone mention that the story is basically "Powerful woman gets her heart stolen and wants to destroy the whole world because of it"?

Daughter is in the Disney phase so I have to either poke holes in the plot or make jokes like above to keep myself sane and take jabs at the wife.
