Log trucks and wrought iron fences with spiky finials freak my fiancée out. We were walking the dog yesterday and she moved to the opposite side of the sidewalk while passing a wrought iron fence

I watched it as a youngster and it really had me shaken for a while after. I still won't watch it till this day because of the scars.

The Exorcist is the scariest because average little girl becomes possessed and Damn!

But Jaws social impact is still being felt today. Visceral shark attacks made people fearful of going in the water when those like me had never given the fear of a shark attack a single thought before the book/movie came out.

The Hills Have Eyes.

I saw it in a theater when it was first released. I'm not sure if I've watched a scary movie since then. I pretty much stick to comedy, drama, action now. That movie was disturbing.

Maybe it caught me at the right time but the original Halloween is the scariest movie of all time to me. We would watch it when I was 5 or 6 and it scarred me for life in a good way. I’m a huge Halloween Franchise fanboy, but I still have nightmares literally about Micheal Myers to this day.

ok, since so many people said Event Horizon, I just watched it.

I promise I'm not trying to be an arse, or "edgy", but really?

I know the effects look silly by today's standards, and I can easily look past that. But the acting is pretty bad, the "jump scares" are telegraphed, and the whole concept gets dumb towards the end.

It's not a terrible film, but how in the world can it be compared to Jaws, The Exorcist, or even The Blair Witch Project?

Maybe it was one of those that was scarier in the theaters?

like with all scary movies, time and place make a huge difference

Jaws never scared me in the slightest. Neither did The Exorcist or BWP, but the latter was probably due to me being older.

As a 13 year old watching Event Horizon in the dark with only my older brother, it scared the shite out of me. Moreso than any other movie I've watched. The only other movie that would come close would be the original IT.

I didn't like The Omen.

I don't generally like scary movies.

The trailers from Paranormal Activity can EABOD.

Saw it in the theater when it came out. Haven't been able to sit through it at home.Tried a couple of times and chickened out. I'll have nightmares if I watch it. I'll probably have them by spending the amount of time I did thinking about it to type this.

Event Horizon
That's another one I can't watch again. Saw it late one night and had to watch a couple of hours of Frasier to get it out of my head. I was worthless the next day because I only slept a couple of hours.

I think they hold up rather well to be honest.

I disagree.

Hmm. I don't think that they are any more so than other horror films.

How so?

I think that it is below Jaws and the Exorcist, but not by all that much in my opinion. The Blair Witch Project pales in comparison.

== It was clearly shot and FX'd for 3D, having objects needlessly fly towards the viewer's center view. Lots of other examples, but overall it's just early CGI and it shows. Again, I have no problem with that part.

I disagree.

== you are free to do so. The character Cooper is terrible comic relief. The others aren't much better.

== They talk as if the ship itself is now sentient and doesn't want them to leave. That seems kinda silly to me. I like the idea of the ship accidently ripping a hole in to another dimension, and of that dimension being akin to hell, but suddenly the ship is alive? Nah.

== Have you ever been lost in the woods? Night is falling and you are so turned around you have no idea where you are going? You are exhausted and every step you take could be taking you further from civilization?

I have. It's pretty freaking scary. And I'm not one to needlessly panic. Now add in a creepy arse witch, twig symbols, voices and sounds in the night, and a slowly increasing level of primal fear.

Yeah, that' some scary shite.

Also, go read the interpretation of the end of the movie and how it was shot. Remember, it's a Found Footage film. And the characters were using two types of camera, one digital and one film (I think). Only one had audio. Now follow the end from where they go in the witches house and notice how the sound and the different camera perspectives tell the story of what actually happened. It's fricking brilliant and scarier when you understand it.

I admittedly don’t know your age. But I was a Senior in HS when it came out, so I saw it in theaters opening day.

It was also one of the first movies to use a widespread viral campaign on the internet. That played into it a lot because it was difficult to discern until after the fact if it was “real”. So it’s hard to capture that in rewatching it or growing up before/after that period IMO. But at the time, it was scary as hell.

I also saw it a week before a camping trip (we all saw it together). We cancelled.

ETA: Talking about the Blair Witch Project (sorry, Centinel)

I was so confused about you saying you were just about forty, then posting this, until I realized you were talking about Blair Witch and not Jaws.

Damn...I had that loaded up this morning and was going to post it and then figured no one would remember an old TV movie from 1973! This movie scared the absolute shite out of me as a kid.
