Evil little bastards.

My six year old has been begging me to watch that.

I get creeped out pretty easy. So most 70s - 90s horror creeps me out. Once horror became gore I tapped out. Just not interested in gore porn or cannibal flicks.

One that stuck with me for a long time as a kids was Burnt Offerings. The Chauffer really freaked me out.

Yep, and it’s actually a good movie with important messages that are still relevant today. The struggle between good and evil, and between true religious faith and our increasingly secular world. Today’s Jesuits probably wouldn’t have cooperated in its making.

Strangers as a kid for me. All the sinister/conjuring shite doesn’t scare me whatsoever. Three strangers dressed up like that terrorizing you in a remote place was terrifying and still is.

I think most people’s “scariest movie of all time” has a lot to do with what year the movie came out, how old the person was, and what they were exposed to or expecting going in.

Everyone I know who is older and saw The Exorcist as a teen at a drivein, hands down says it was the scariest. By the time I saw the exorcist, I had seen a dozen other possession movies and it didn’t do anything for me, but I would imagine at the time of its release - there was nothing like it and it was shocking/terrifying.

For me, it was Saw - which isn’t that scary of a movie, but I saw it one night in an empty movie theatre with just two friends, right when it came out and without seeing a trailer or ever hearing about it. The little thing on a bike and the twist at the end fricked us up and we had to call our parents to pick us up we were so scared.

I’m curious about the poster who mentioned “Green Mile” and the scenario around when you first watched it.

The two that scared me most as a kid were Poltergeist and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

It’s always one you see (and probably shouldn’t have but you sneaked around anyway) when you are younger that get you the most.

But some more so than others. Remember stuff like Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine etc. that were scary to watch as a ten year old but it ended with the movie.

But some would stick with you and you didn’t want to even think about them. Those vampire boys scratching at the window in Salems Lot. Riding around the corner and seeing those damn twins in The Shining. That damn clown doll in Poltergeist. Still creepy today.

I’m still convinced anyone that was actually “scared” of this movie was just going along with the pop culture phenomenon.

Event Horizon
Exorcist
Hereditary
Nightmare on Elm Street
The Ring

Has to be one of those 5 imo.

The ring scared the bejesus out of me as a 12/13 year old. That’s the last time a horror movie truly scared me

It wasn’t so much that it was scary, it was more that people believed it was a true story. I had a friend who was convinced it was real and was like, “frick that witch” and wanted to make a trip and camp out in the woods. It took me quite a while to convince him it wasn’t real.

The Green Mile as a whole isn’t scary, but the “dry sponge” scene is very hard to watch. It would likely be one of my Top 5 favorite movies if not for that scene.

When I was a kid, The Exorcist scared the crap out of me. Lately, it’s Hostel—not scary in the traditional sense, just disturbingly violent.

As a teenager when I saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre it left me shaking. And I think the reason is during the credits it said this was a true story and they were serving life sentences in Texas prisons.

Just the thought, even though it wasn't true, that there were actually people like this left me disturbed.

TCM has to replace Nightmare. And that would be a great list to cover a huge % of the population....especially since it stops before getting into extreme stuff, stuff more weird than scary, more psychological stuff, or relying on subtitles that most people can't/won't buy into.

I can give some honorable mentions.

Sinister (Doesn't land the ending but it's scary as shite throughout)
Rec (original)
Hell House, LLC (I would suggest the director's cut b/c if has better effects)
The Descent
Paranormal Activity

Definitely this. I watched Pumpkinhead when I was 11 or 12 at a buddy's house, and I can remember not being able to sleep over at this house anymore after that.

Halloween. I saw it way too young. Halloween night was rough for me until about 13. Brother would keep a white mask in the closet just to mess with me around that time. Thankfully I got over all that.
