Everybody talks about The American Werewolf transformation but it was The Howling one that messed me up

Yeah I guess I kinda forgot how cheezy it gets later into the flick.
But damn...that first half of the movie had my old arse on the edge of my seat.

Okay, so because of the Phantasm discussion earlier in the thread, I went back and watched it last week (it's on Prime Video).

Man, watching it now it seems so silly. Admittedly, horror movies scared the shite out of me as a kid, but watching as an adult I found that Phantasm just isn't really very good and is weird as frick. I also vastly overestimated how much the flying orb thing is in the movie. It basically is only there once when it kills the guy, then another time flying around before ole boy shoots it and destroys it. But that thing sure did terrify me as a little kid.

I think Phantasm is one of those movies that was great during its time, but hasn't aged well at all. Because now it just feels sort of jumbled and all over the place.

The first Phantasm movie is a cult classic. It is an independent produced movie that had a budget well under one million but grossed over 30 million. It was a surprising hit at the movies.

Now after the second movie, it became a direct to video series and the rest of movies couldn't match the first. The first movie has aged really well because no other horror movie was like it since.

The silver orbs are the most iconic of the series. The tall man puts human brains in the orbs and they are somewhat conscious. In Phantasm Ravager they become as large as buildings and use lasers destructive enough to destroy several blocks. Those are the tall man's best weapons and he probably has millions at his disposal.

The tall man is one of the most sophisticated villains in horror movies and very mysterious. He has many abilities and a vast army of reanimated dwarfs, soldiers and deadly orbs.

He has accomplished a feat that many villains would drool over and that is world conquest. He did so with an alien virus that kills most of mankind that has no vaccine or cure. Then governments and nations collapsed. The tall man uses his orbs especially the larger ones to lay waste to cites and armies all around the world. Reggie one of the main protagonists is part of the resistance and the only ones to slow him down.

The tall was known as Jebidiah Morningside. He was a mortician during the events of the civil war. He was obsessed with death and the afterlife. He ended up inventing a portal that would travel through space and time. He went into the portal but came backed changed as the tall man.

The only weakness he has is that the mortal body he inhabits but as the tall man explained in the last movie, he has tens of thousands that look just like him and will come back through the portal from a different dimension as a replacement. But even as a human, he has incredible strength on par with Jason and Micheal and still very hard to kill.

First half of Creepers is badass, man I wish the rest of the movie held up.

The beginning is awesome.

Howling is a cool movie, creepiest werewolf on screen in my opinion.

We disagree on that. But I was also comparing it to my terrified kid self’s thoughts on it.

And holy shite, you know way more about the Phantasm series than I ever would.

poltergeist is very underrated on here as well.

Also for me exorcism of emily rose was pretty rough and Steven King had a movie called Cats Eye that had a troll on it that took you breath at night. Still haunts me to this day

I watched all of them except the second movie. Some horror films have no plot and will have 15 or so sequels with no end in the future.

This series gives little clues as it builds up to where and when it will end. So it makes easier to understand and follow than other horror films.

The big negative with low budget direct to video movies is the terrible CGI. This one is no different and the acting besides Angus Scrimm is just bad. I'm talking a bout the last movie of the series. So expectations need to be low.

I have seen worst horror movies so far and those are Jack Frost and Jack Frost 2 the revenge of the killer snowman.

Recent horror movies that are good

Sinister
The Babadook
Session 9
The Grudge
The Ring
It follows
A quiet place
The Witch
It Comes at Night
Let the Right One In

I scrolled through and didn’t see anyone mention Hereditary. That movie is a masterpiece. The build up of existential dread and intense sorrow during the entire movie is powerful as hell, and Toni Colette gives one of the best performances of all time.

Amityville Horror

I still look outside through a window at night and expect to see two red eyes staring back at me.

The stairwell scene from the grudge creeps me out too. As the door closes and there's that face staring at Buffy.

A neighbor told me that someone killed themselves in the garage at the house in in now. I'm usually up late, like 1 or 2 am and every night before I go to bed I make the rounds locking doors and turning off lights. The garage door is usually they last thing I get to, the light for the garage is in the garage so I always have to open the door and reach my hand in to turn off the light and I just always get the feeling that something is going to end up staring at me as I close the door.

Not only the transformation, but this particular gif always bother me in The Exorcist.

The demon was exhibiting its anger, and you can tell it was awaiting Fr. Merrin and Fr. Karras.

It probably does need a new thread. But I'm just making a list to see if anymore remembers these movies. Especially the hilariously bad ones I mentioned.
