Stiller has a weird sense of humor. The original ending of dodgeball was when White pegs Peter in the finals. Roll credits. No over the line, no awesome girl on girl kiss.

Stiller and the director thought it was hilarious. It tested terribly so they had to revise the ending. That’s why the ending is so absurdly over the top.

Hell the treasure chest actually has “Deus Ex Machina” written on it.

I really like him a lot, and I love that he's been doing more thought-provoking comedic stuff lately. Walter Mitty, While We're Young, Brad's Status. Just really have enjoyed the stuff he's done recently.

For people who knock Hanks for always playing Hanks.

The real person who always plays himself is Stiller. He almost always plays the same character or a slight variation. Oddly enough, I did like him in Walter Mitty. Surprised how much I liked that film.

I'm not knocking him. He plays a a jackass perfectly.

I think "great" is too strong. How much range does he really have?

He does do good job of surrounding himself with good people and generally makes a quality product.

Solid, I think, better than great. Maybe I haven't seen enough of his off the beaten path stuff to really judge. And I'm a huge fan of Tropic Thunder - and that was almost all him. writer/director/producer/star.

He actually plays 2 characters. He has the subdued, romcom wimpy persona (Polly, Focker, Museum, etc) and then he has the evil twin (Happy Gilmore, Dodgeball, Heavyweights)

I think he's usually better in his own stuff, for instance, he was super out of place in The Royal Tenenbaums but amazing in Tropic Thunder.

I liked him in Keeping the Faith with Edward Norton.

I know that he shouldn't get the blame for that Farrelly brothers abortion of The Heartbreak Kid, but I put some of that on Stiller. They raped a classic with that one.

I liked The Heartbreak Kid

OP, check out Permanent Midnight if you want to see a different kind of Stiller movie. It’s not “great” but it’s a really solid movie where he plays a pretty convincing junkie. Him trying to smoke cigarettes in the movie is cringe worthy though.

I have a hard time liking this character on Heavyweights now, knowing that he's the one responsible for that abortion of a Ghostbusters reboot.

Seriously, I had no idea it was him.

In searching for Heavyweights gifs, I found out that the actor who played this kid died a couple months ago.

Ben Stiller is a great actor. His style is uniquely his own. The only way I could describe it would be that he plays over the top truthfully. Its bizarre. He's overacting, but he's not. It does require certain roles for him though if he really wants to shine...Dodgeball, Zoolander, Heavyweights are some of the best examples.

So I met him and his Mom and Dad when he was filming that movie ... we leased our kids camp out to him at the time, (my first wife's family actually owned the camp) and my Daughters were in the movie. (So was our famous Gamecock cheerleader and future Playmate Lauren Hill who is now married to Sean Patrick Flannery.)

But anyways, Stiller was a total dick to be around .... he hates the South and let us all know it. Now his Dad, Jerry, when we were out at a dinner they held for us, told us Ben was just "in character" and don't take it personally ... but Ben was a total dick. I mean he really hates the South. I mean what a dick the guy was.

I like some of his movies, though it's just hard to watch any of them and not remembering what a total complete dick and asshat he was irl.

He's not a big guy either. I think part of his issue may be a Napoleon syndrome thing. He was a dick to everyone. Screaming and hollering and pitching fits and just showing his arse like a spoiled brat.

His Mom and Dad though ... man they were great people. Loved those two. We really enjoyed getting to know them, had them into our home for dinner ... really really nice people.
