Can't make historical epics anymore without a 99% black leading cast.

All of those things would be too white and straight for Hollywood. They need movies where you can place in lots of non-whites and LGBTQ actors and write in gay sex scenes.

I would love this. They could base it on the Colleen Mccollough series of books and build on it if it did well.

Not enough POC or LBGQT+
The 2022 mob would probably find these folks, and many more real heroes, lacking:
King David
King Soloman
Julius Caesar
Henry VIII
Elizabeth I
Napolean
Christopher Columbus
James Cook
Thomas Jefferson
George Wahington
Andrew Jackson
Robert E. Lee
George Patton
Douglas MacArthur
Harry S. Truman

You consider this specific Henry a hero? He's usually the villain, and he's been considered such for a few hundred years now.

He did some good things for England. Being the unimformed historian that I am, I picked, and chose a few out on his wiki.
David is one of the most revered Christian figures. His relationship with Bathsheba, and her husband Uriah the Hittite, was similar to the things Henry VIII did. He basically murdered the guy so he could take his wife. For some reason all of the good things David did, and him having the faith to eventually ask forgiveness for his sins, outweighs his transgressions.

Henry is also known as "the father of the Royal Navy" as he invested heavily in the navy and increased its size from a few to more than 50 ships, and established the Navy Board.
quote:
Henry is known for his radical changes to the English Constitution, ushering in the theory of the divine right of kings in opposition to papal supremacy.
quote:
He also converted the money that was formerly paid to Rome into royal revenue.
quote:
he oversaw the annexure of Wales to England with the Laws in Wales Acts 1535 and 1542 and was the first English monarch to rule as King of Ireland following the Crown of Ireland Act 1542.

Henry's contemporaries considered him to be an attractive, educated and accomplished king. He has been described as "one of the most charismatic rulers to sit on the English throne" and his reign has been described as the "most important" in English history.
quote:
On 30 June 1513, Henry invaded France, and his troops defeated a French army at the Battle of the Spurs – a relatively minor result, but one which was seized on by the English for propaganda purposes. Soon after, the English took Thérouanne and handed it over to Maximillian; Tournai, a more significant settlement, followed.[45] Henry had led the army personally, complete with a large entourage.[46] His absence from the country, however, had prompted his brother-in-law James IV of Scotland to invade England at the behest of Louis.[47] Nevertheless, the English army, overseen by Queen Catherine, decisively defeated the Scots at the Battle of Flodden on 9 September 1513.[48] Among the dead was the Scottish king, thus ending Scotland's brief involvement in the war.[48] These campaigns had given Henry a taste of the military success he so desired. However, despite initial indications, he decided not to pursue a 1514 campaign. He had been supporting Ferdinand and Maximilian financially during the campaign but had received little in return; England's coffers were now empty.[49] With the replacement of Julius by Pope Leo X, who was inclined to negotiate for peace with France, Henry signed his own treaty with Louis: his sister Mary would become Louis' wife, having previously been pledged to the younger Charles, and peace was secured for eight years, a remarkably long time.[

Most of the movies coming out are cartoons, comic books, and animation. Seems the days of real movies are long gone.

12 Years A Slave, Lincoln, The Favorite, Silence, The King The Revenant, and The Two Popes. Not sure why you are excluding the WW's an recent history because there are quite a few that would fall into those categories.

Those aren’t epics. Good movies but they’re very contained and character specific movies.

They gave us Woman King.

Lol well I think the OP is referring to historical movies that attempt to reflect history and reality. Woman King is pure fiction with the expressed intent of pushing an agenda. In all seriousness the subject matter is very interesting and I’d love more historical content from that time and place but sadly we’ll never get it now.

The Woke Hollywood agendas dirtiest little secret is that they make these heavily “inclusive” movies to emasculate black men. It’s a bait and switch operation.

quote:The Northman is a take on the Norse tale that inspired Hamlet; it's a decent movie but not very epic in scope.
I haven’t seen The Northman yet, so correct me if that belongs in this category, but history is so ripe with stories of war it frustrates me Hollywood stays away from this now. Im not talking about limited series either, I’m talking big budget, marketed movies, epic battles with historical settings.
I think part of the problem is "politics". War has always been a great dramatic backdrop, but right now "war" is considered a bad thing, and showing valor and heroic deeds would be considered "glamorizing war". Note that most of the more recent flicks that come out are very bleak and depressing, they have to make it that way to get past the in-house censors.
You can get away with heroic struggles in comic book movies and fantasies, which is part of the reason they're popular now. There really isn't a community of orcs or such, that would be offended by that.
