I know. I agree. I guess my issue is that it happened so quickly after they ran out of gas and there wasn’t any immediate danger. I wish there had been a little more of a feeling of impending doom when it happened.

A Civil Action, with John Travolta. I don't recall being so frustrated with the ending of a movie since. An hour and something of set up, only to have the movie close with "Well, we're bankrupt. Let's go home."

The cast alone promised an almost can't fail - Travolta, Duvall, William H Macy...but apparently no one in the studio took the time to read the script and figure out that it didn't have entertainment value from a climax / resolution standpoint. When the credits began to roll, I was like "What the hell is this?"

In the Mouth of Madness comes to mind. GREAT setup; horrible ending.

Like..as in..I promise you will sleep better at night if the first time you watch the movie you turn it off 10 minutes before the ending and think of it as a great movie.

what could have been

There's lots of good examples in this thread.

And the only one I will concede is Sunshine. However, I wouldn't call it a "bad" ending per say. The third act is definitely weaker than the first two, but it certainly was not bad. While I found the out-of-nowhere horror elements to be somewhat disconcerting, the film's final 15 minutes are breathtakingly, and objectively, beautiful. Capa's jump is freaking epic.

A Civil Action is based on a true story, that's how it actually ended

Understood. What I question is who the hell thought it had cinematic value? I mean, if I tried...I don't know that I could write a script with a more frustrating ending.

Not a movie but just one of late. The Netflix show Ratched. Was pretty great all the way through except the final episode. Terrible ending.

The Holy Grail for me. I just cut it off at that point.

The No Country For Old men is interesting. I think it answers some questions posed here. I did not like the ending, but I did not have to. I enjoyed every single second before it, and the story/movie needed nothing more at that point.

Count me in the category of liking the ending. I love this movie all the way through, and I accept that I am in the minority.

Honestly, that may as well have been Game of Thrones ending. Way more exciting and less anticlimactic than that.

Unfaithful

Good movie until the ending. Went off the rails and then anti-climactic finish. Gere was awful.

Pretty Woman. I am not opposed to "fairytale" endings but I thought it would have been better with a less happy ending.

I also didn't like the ending to Coming To America. For a movie with such great performances, the ending was so underwhelming.

The ending was brilliant. I'm not usually surprised in movies, the ending and the fact I didn't recognize his handler earlier in the movie really helped make the movie for me. That was easily Costner's best performance (he sets the bar pretty low).

I saw this once on cable. Have not heard of it since, until this thread. I have seen at least part of Erin Brockovich about a dozen times on cable. One ending is far more realistic but yea, people don't want to watch that shite. I loved it though.

Yep. There was an audible gasp in the theater I was in when the big reveal happened.
