What are some movies that best show the initial collapse of society?

Referring to disaster/zombie/alien/etc. movies, but if you have any other examples please feel free to offer them up.

I just rewatched War of the Worlds this weekend and thought the whole movie was great in showing people panicking and fleeing, all trying to find some refuge. Other than one tiny moment, it didn't delve into the tired "humans are the real monster" cliche.

I haven't watched World War Z in awhile, but I remember really enjoying the beginning scene while they're driving around.

I'll use some television examples:

The Stand miniseries (1994) was pretty legit for its day.

The Day After (1983) (Directed by the cat who directed The Wrath of Khan) - Excellent drama film with a disaster (nuclear war) backdrop.

You're thinking of Damnation Alley. Strangely enough, I also thought of that film for the topic, but too specific and too over-the-top to fit.

But, bizarre minds must think alike.

(ETA: And Paul Winfield was in both Damnation Alley AND The Wrath of Khan, although not in The Day After )

Not a movie but "One Second After" was pretty damn tragic in its depiction of everything going to shite after a massive EMP attack.

Damn good book.

Doesn't match your criteria exactly, but still a damned good movie if you like dystopia type things.

World War Z was pretty good at detailing the panic. Contagion was pretty good if I remember correctly.
