Variety Article: Disney is on a roll, but Snow White could halt momentum

When Bob Iger returned to the Disney CEO throne at the end of 2022, his first order of business was to dismantle a structure that saw the studio’s distribution and creative divisions operating separately. Instead, he put distribution and marketing under the control of Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman. One year later, Iger made clear that Disney would stay far away from the culture wars that had taken a toll on the company’s stock price amid a revolt from conservative consumers. “Creators lost sight of what their No. 1 objective needed to be,” he said at the DealBook Summit. “We have to entertain first. It’s not about messages.”
Fast-forward to 2024, and “Moana 2” marks the fulfilment of those two adjustments — a movie able to pivot from its planned release on Disney+ and escape the wrath of right-wing influencers who believe the studio had been pushing a “woke” ideology, a perception stoked by activist shareholder Nelson Peltz. The animated sequel, which features a voice cast led by Dwayne Johnson — an actor whose appeal straddles both sides of the political divide — shattered Thanksgiving box office records en route to a $386 million worldwide haul. Disney appears to have got its groove back following misfires like “The Marvels” and “Wish.”
“Disney had been for a long time on top, and everything had been smooth sailing,” says box office analyst Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations. “And then they ran into some rough waters. And this is ‘Moana’ sailing away from that and back to the promised land.”
Less than a year ago, the “Moana” follow-up was poised to be a streaming series rather than a feature theatrical release.
I can't believe it was going to be a streaming film

Looking ahead, analysts believe that a live-action “Mufasa” and “Lilo & Stitch” and an animated “Zootopia” sequel will extend the studio’s streak. But one upcoming release, March’s live-action “Snow White,” has been dogged by expensive reshoots and controversies related to star Rachel Zegler’s social media posts. The actress declined to take down a tweet thread that promoted the $240 million movie with a “free palestine” postscript but did apologize for a “frick Donald Trump” and “May Trump supporters … never know peace” Instagram post. Wading into divisive issues, as Zegler has done, isn’t part of Disney’s new playbook.
“We just had an election, and in very rough terms, half of the voters supported one side and half supported the other side,” says Guggenheim Securities’ Michael Morris, speaking generally and not about Scherzinger or Zegler specifically. “And if I am a company that is trying to connect with the broadest potential audience and I cut that addressable market in half before I even release the product, I’m really limiting my ability to maximize the value of the product. That’s why it’s important to entertain first and foremost.”

Meanwhile, the live-action division headed up by David Greenbaum will continue to mine some of the most valuable IP in Hollywood. All eyes are trained on the $4.53 billion “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise and the prospect of another sequel. Sources say the studio has not engaged with Johnny Depp, the franchise’s biggest draw, who found himself exiled by Disney after ex-wife Amber Heard accused him of domestic abuse. But Depp prevailed in a 2022 defamation case against the actress and has been on the comeback trail.

Their meaning "on a roll" must be different than mine. One good movie and box office a roll does not make. Now if the other movies come out strong then you are on a roll but this is classic counting your chickens before they are hatched.

Iger has said this multiple times and nothing has changed.
Friendly reminder #2717 that Disney admitted in SEC filings that they were putting out messages and people were not entertained.

This is a nice way of saying they took their customer base for granted, told them to go frick themselves for having the wrong politics, and it didn't work out.

Don't even make it if you don't have Depp

She's so fricking stupid.

Did he get paid for this analysis? I feel like this is the most common sense aspect of any business.

Probably factoring in Inside Out 2 which did 1.6 billion. Mufasa also comes out before Snow White and odds are it's going to kill it.
I personally think and kind of hope Snow White bombs but I don't think it's going to stop anybody from wanting to go see a live action Lilo and Stitch if they want to go see that movie. It's already been proven that an unsuccessful movie like Lightyear didn't stop people from going to see Disney afterwards.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Qunatumania, The Marvels, The Little Mermaid, Indiana Jones, Elemental, Wish, and soon to be Snow White flops suggest they are not on a roll (despite Deadpool 3 and Inside Out 2) and did not learn any lessons.

Captain America is almost guaranteed to lose money and Thunderbolts will struggle as well

Inside Out 2
Deadpool and Wolverine
Moana 2
They will be three most successful films of 2024, they will likely be the only three to go over $1 billion in 2024 (though something in December could always surprise). Mufasa will likely be the highest grossing film released in December, though there's a chnce that could go to Sonic.
They also put out Alien Romulus, which i believe is the highest grossing horror film of the year. Didn't double check it.
Outside of Mufasa, these films have all been well-liked.
If this board's collective wet dream comes true, Snow White, Captain America, and Thunderbolts will all disappoint. I would think the marvel films to be bigger risks than snow white. They are likely each more expensive, they don't get the soft landing of having a kid/family audience, and they won't get the awareness bump that snow white does from disney plus, like moana 2 did.

I really don’t see the point of this movie, and it ruins the original completely if true that Scar and Mufasa aren’t actually brothers and that Mufasa actually took the throne from Scar. That would mean that Scar actually has a point and isn’t simply a green eyed evil monster filled with envy.

Depends if Scar is always a shite heal and Mufasa is just a better king then I wouldn't say it ruins it.

Why do people want that to fail? It looks fun to me.

They have decided all marvel is woke, thus they want, even need, every marvel project to be bad.
Unless it's Deadpool, for whatever reason. He gets a free pass.

Yea man people just “decided” for no reason to start disliking something they were fans of just a handful of years ago except for Deadpool. Such a rational and logical take.
