I think the tent revivals might act as a trap for lost souls laid out by Tuttle or people connected with him. The women show up and are scouted by the Preacher. Relationships are built and the shiny-faced guy leads the girls back to the drug compound where they are slowly dosed with drugs. Cohle suggested the slow dosing of the girls in an earlier episode.
Yeah, all of that.

any thoughts on the shots of all the industrial facilities prevalent in the show and opening credits? All of the other shots are about religion or sex, which are obvious themes of the show.

Hm certainly plausible, but something tells me the preacher isn't involved. Seems too easy as a confirmation of everything Rust believes.
Does anyone know the precise relationship between the preacher and Tuttle?

He just so happened to mow his lawn when he got back. I thought it was funny how hypocritical Marty was being when he said "No one mows my lawn but me." I'm pretty positive that he was meaning that no one was fricking his wife but him.
I think it was a coincidence that time but it seemed like they are developing some type of relationship. Marty definitely thought it was strange, which I agree from his standpoint. Marty was freaked out about him being there but also started to feel bad due to his own infidelities. IMO, they are setting up for something to happen between Marty's wife and Rust, especially with their relationship being in it's current rut. Just my thoughts

ust finished the entire 3rd ep. man, maybe I am too fixated on the theory of Rust being a split personality from Marty, but lots and lots of signs are there if you have that in your mind. damn. That ending diatribe about your pain, love, hurt, memories, etc.. all being a part of a dream you had in a locked room...a dream of being "a person"...you read it as his pessimism and dreary outlook could be that he he knows he isn't real
You really need to let this theory go, man. Just put it down, and walk away slowly. Better yet, put it on a tee and Ryno that bitch over the mountains and out of the world.

So Rust bangs his wife and then they stay partners for 7 more years? I feel like I am just telling people they are wrong in this thread, but I also feel like a shite load of people are missing a bunch of context clues...

I think the only thing they said was that the preacher went to Tuttle's school.

How do you explain the present day interviews if he has a split personality?

You are too fixated. This would be terrible writing and a boring conclusion.

Marty has spoken very highly of Rust in the present day interviews. Something tells me that Marty knows Rust was right all along which would most likely mean his religious/Tuttle theory was right.

I want to know the connection to the children in the woods and these killings. Or if there is any connection at all. Usually a serial killer keeps to one type of person.
I thought from the very moment we met Rev Tuttle that he was THE guy.
Ol Reggie will take the initial fall, but won't be the killer. I doubt he'll even have any connection to the person that did it, maybe a drug supplier?
That whole Tuttle college in BR, if that's not a nod to Swaggert, idk what is.
"Eli" is def going to play some role in this. Maybe as others have stated the killer uses the church to lure in lost souls. He already has a connection to Tuttle.

Awesome episode this week.
Loved Marty going batshit on ole girl and the dude she fricked. Also loved that all he wanted to know was if she had sicked his duck or not. And then the whole "I don't normally do this...I'm not a psycho."
Ole Rustin gonna be tapping Marty's wife soon? I hope not, but it's certainly possible. I'm not sure Rust would do that, and I think that scene had more to do with showing us that Marty has a completely guilty conscience based on what he's doing with ole girl with dem tittays...which is why he immediately jumps to shady conclusions and basically accuses Rust of bad intentions when he very well just could've been returning the mower and cutting the grass as a thank you.
Woody Harrelson obviously signed the better contract between he and MM...dude is all up in some tits in the last two episodes.
I also love how sloppy Marty is with that chick. He wants to go get beer when wifey already mentioned that the waitress would do it. And then he talks to the girl at the bar for a few. And then he stares at her the entire time dancing with wifey. Horribly, horriblly sloppy, and I expect him to get busted soon. Especially since we know he is no longer married in present-day time.
Interested to see where they take the story now. Based on the fact that this is only 8 episodes long, they'll need to start making huge strides soon...so far we've had a solid introduction and two episodes of chasing clues. I like the pace so far, but we still have to wrap up who they actually arrested/killed back in 95 (and I assume there will be at least one wrongy-accused/dead end involved with that) and then the whole 2012 case in Lake Charles. The fact that they're adding bodies to the count is something that I hope doesn't spell trouble in terms of pacing.
I loved how MM keeps showing up Brother Mouzone and the other black cop. "I've never been in a room longer than ten minutes and not known if someone was guilty or not......how long does it take you to figure that out?"
I'm not caught up on the thread yet, but I agree with some comments I've seen about MM's dialogue. It's cool, but pretty forced at times. We get it, he's deep and intelligent. Stop banging us over the head with it. But hopefully it all leads to something though.
Great show so far, but I saw a comment earlier about this show eclipsing the Wire and people calling this the best show of the year and whatnot. How about we wait longer than three episodes before we start slinging around bullshite like that..?

I just did some double checking and it looks like Rusts interview with the two black cops happens on Apr 26 2012 and Marty's happens on May1 2012.
Could it be possible that Rust is killed after his interview and they are interviewing Marty? I mean they are asking most of the questions directly about Rust to Marty

Yeah, they've mentioned to the black detectives a time or two about the kids they found in the woods. It's obviously another significant event that they worked on together. I'm just wondering if its connected to the killings, and if so, in what way.

Doubtful. Rust is asexual.
Also it doesn't really fit the character profile - I suppose he could get drunk and slip up, but I don't see it.

Yeah pretty sure Marty wants to get busted. Based on the admission that he's "fricked up". He probably just wants relief at this point (kinda similar to how MM described people before they die - "just letting go")

Yeah it gets a bit overwhelming, but it fits into the whole nihilism vs. religion theme of the show, including the "darkness becomes you" motif.
