It's also worth pointing out that Marty is not "a real" Christian. As in, he doesn't really believe either. He, like most people I'd imagine, constructs borders--he separates his deepest thoughts about the truth from what it takes to get along with life. This is the source of his disagreement with Rust. He doesn't challenge Rust on the substance (usually); he wants Rust to stop talking.
The question is, how far does Marty's ability to "compartmentalize" go?

This guy. I feel bad for you.
You'd think that someone who admits he doesn't understand what Rust is talking about would not be so quick to judge whether his "rants" make sense or not.

Anyone think "Tuttle's college in Baton Rouge" will have any significance later on?
CoCo is still holding on to the Gov.'s cousin. That's another little line that could point in that direction.
I believe that could all be clues.
The longer they keep the preacher/governor angle out of the episodes the more it leads me to believe they are the source of the murders.
The whole Ledoux bit seems like misdirection and/or "pinning it on the wrong guy" angle that others have mentioned in this thread.

Yeah Billy Lee Tuttle will have to pop up again soon.

This may be small and moot, but why is the Parish mowing Tuttle property? I see it an another link from Gov Tuttle to his cousin Rev Tuttle. Typical Louisiana move.

I just rewatched that scene for the screenshot. I find it odd as well that the parish is mowing his property. Also, this location was added to his workload just a few months ago [He also covers a number of other properties in the parish].

did MM allude to the school in episode 2? I thought I recalled him bringing up a school closed due to Andrew with the present detectives, but then it kind of led to nothing.

Here's a pretty good recap of last night's episode. It also talks about the nature of Rust and Marty.

It would be easy to believe Cohle’s faith in a meaningless universe and the aberration of humanity represents his “true nature.” But in “The Locked Room,” when Cohle passes judgment on the faithful, labeling them idiotic and sinful people who tell themselves stories “to get…through the day,” he doesn’t sound like he’s conversing with Hart. He sounds like he’s reciting. Cohle reminds me of how a young reader will regurgitate Frederic Nietzsche or Howard Zinn upon first exposure. He speaks like a man who has carefully selected and crafted his philosophy, but spits it back out into the world as though that is the only way he can be sure of what he believes. Hart senses this.
“You seem panicked,” he says. And that for a man who believes life is meaningless Cohle “frets about it an awful lot.”
Cohle’s frets because, like the men and women under the spell of the Preacher, he searches for answers. In the previous episode, Cohle wrapped up the death of his child in a tidy philosophical bow, insisting that her “painless” death was elegant. By dying, she saved him from “the sin of fatherhood” and herself from toiling in “the thresher” of the world. I believe 2012 Rust Cohle actually believes this. Whatever happened at the end of the Dora Lange case pushed him forever down the rabbit hole. But in 1995, I’m not so sure he’s a complete convert. Not unlike the congregants Cohle decries, he is ”cultivating his own illusion” to get through the day. If the universe is meaningless then losing a child, losing a wife, losing the chance to mow his own yard for for his own family are not losses worth mourning. But Cohle can’t help himself. He shows up to Hart’s house, mows Hart’s lawn, and visits with Hart’s wife and Hart’s children. He does not wish to steal them from Marty, but he desperately wants Marty’s life. So Cohle tricks himself with faith in nothingness because it is safer than starting all over again.

The whole grass cutting bit was just theme (with the conflict of MM and WH earlier about cutting another man's grass) and to introduce the school of the victim for a connection

He did mention a girls school losing in '92 I believe.

WSJ Thinks Billy Lee Tuttle Is The Guy
quote:
Louisiana spiritual leader Billy Lee Tuttle is the unfired gun of “True Detective.” He was introduced in “The Long Bright Dark” and we know that not only is Tuttle related to the governor of Louisiana, he is deeply concerned with the murder of Dora Lange and its religious implications. The Tuttle Gun wasn’t fired in tonight’s episode of “True Detective,” “The Locked Room,” but the hammer may have been cocked. In the opening act of “The Locked Room,” Hart and Cohle track down the roaming congregation once attended by Dora Lange.
There they discover that she came to services accompanied by a “tall man with a shiny face.” Hart and Cohle also learn that the pompadour’d and side burn’d revival preacher was enrolled at Billy Lee Tuttle’s university for a few years.

Yeah, Billy Lee Tuttle will play a big role. Not sure if he is the actual murdered or just responsible in some way.

Wow, it took me on the 3rd time to realize the guy in the underwear with the Walter White meth mask (possibly Reggie LeDeaux?) had the tepee wooden thing by him at the end of the episode.
Wait what? Must go check that.
