Yeah I feel the same way.
My theory is that Marty was so ignorant in 1995 he couldn't make the case against Tuttle happen (due to gov't pressure and his own religious beliefs), so they pinned it on Ledoux.
You can tell 2012 version of Marty is much more complimentary of Rust - looking back he knows Rust was right and it seems like he's become more of a realist.

at times it sounds less like an actual conversation, and more like Rust Cohle's random thoughts about life and death and religion. It's still interesting though
That's because that is exactly what it is.

Yes, the the key to understanding Rust is that Hart is right--he is panicked. He's at once a deeply profound and poetic thinker and also someone who doesn't see just how far his reasoning is motivated.
But to be honest, I'm really put off by these reviews that say Rust is doing teenage-style philosophizing. The same people often clearly indicate that they don't understand what Rust is saying. For one thing, although Rust and Nietzsche have a lot in common, Rust is ultimately the opposite of a Nietzschean--he's a pessimist. The person to look up is Schopenhauer.

Agreed. I'm starting to lean that way myself. He may have not been he guy that actually killed her, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was the one leading the cult.
A big, hefty, powerful man with a slick tongue are usually the type to lead these cults.
Politicians want an arrest quickly.
Hope this isn't turning out to be "shite, I killed a hooker. Major, can you sweep this under the rug?" type deal.
I mentioned that the Major we see escorting Tuttle around may have a hand in it as well. That was shot down by my SO. But I wouldn't be surprised.

Probably not.

100% on target.
Just want to say whether its the subject or the people in the subject this thread is perhaps one of the highest quality threads I have ever read on TD.
Any one else agree?

The Major is one of my suspects. Probably would be more than just covering up killing a hooker though.

Billy Lee Tuttle is essentially Big John from Oh Brother, Where Art Tho?

I meant that I think he's the man behind the cult. I don't think he actually killed her.

I think the tent revivals might act as a trap for lost souls laid out by Tuttle or people connected with him. The women show up and are scouted by the Preacher. Relationships are built and the shiny-faced guy leads the girls back to the drug compound where they are slowly dosed with drugs. Cohle suggested the slow dosing of the girls in an earlier episode.

Lawn mower guy is George Remus from BWE.

But he could know something about it. I was reading how a lot of these killers inject themselves into the investigation somehow, offer help, etc.
That's another thing. It seems like this show draws a lot from real criminal investigative analysis. Lots of emphasis the investigative thought process and not getting sucked into biased thinking.

just finished the entire 3rd ep. man, maybe I am too fixated on the theory of Rust being a split personality from Marty, but lots and lots of signs are there if you have that in your mind. damn. That ending diatribe about your pain, love, hurt, memories, etc.. all being a part of a dream you had in a locked room...a dream of being "a person"...you read it as his pessimism and dreary outlook could be that he he knows he isn't real

Also, I don't see some skinny meth addict dragging a body too far or being meticulous enough to set the Lange crime scene.
