Also David Morse (George Washington in HBO's John Adams, Brutus Howell in The Green Mile, among several other things)

Played the Major in "The Rock" ... which I thought was a pretty good role for him with Ed Harris.

Not really getting him as Hippy Compound Guy.

For me a large part of the allure of S1 was the creepy scenic Louisiana along with Fukunaga's great filmography, definitely gonna miss that

This is the main thing. That Louisiana backdrop was so unique and eerie.

the episode didn't grab me like the first episode last season, but I thought it gave us a good understanding of all the major characters and set them up nicely

now hopefully we get to story next week, although just like last season, the crime isn't the story but how the crime affects the characters

I love Colin Farrell

Strong exposition and development of story imo. It was very much a departure from last year's pace and thus worked to separate itself.

Last year the pace matched the environments it seemed. A slow meandering story.

This year, it is more urban and matching pace.

The murder: very interesting that the eyes were removed and the pelvic area mutilated (maybe removed). Removal of eyes is typically associated with some form of shame from the murderer. In other words the victim bore witness to something that embarrassed the killer. Then the pelvic area. Many cultures, castration is a punishment for rape.
Lookin forward to this season and how it plays out. I'm expecting a good story and being forced to think.

Really liked it, and think this will be another great season. The acting is very good in this, as well.

For those criticizing the convenience of the motorcycle cop finding him at the park, that is how the 3 characters are tied together. It's not like the Motorcycle Cop even knew or was looking for this Casper guy. If he was, then found him, then yeah, i would say they went too far to tie them together.

And for those not paying attention
1) We are to assume Colin Farel got revenge on the rapist of his wife. Thus the reason why he works for Vince Vaughen
2) We are to assume Vaughen and the Russian have a past (competing organized crime leaders), thus the tension. It appears Vaughan is getting this deal forward and will allow for a healthy skim and to somewhat legitimize his business. He needs the Russians money to make this deal happen.
3) McAdams is another broken cop who's sister was tied up in drugs, but now does internet porn. SHe went to the hippie place to look for a missing person. Her father happened to be giving a "seminar" at the time there. (a little convenient). She confronts him, and wants him to give a shite about her sister. Something happened in the past with her mother and him. We must assume this will play out later.
4) Kitsch is a motorcycle cop with some obvious personal issues. Most likely PTSD. I believe they mentioned the Army, so he was probably in Afghanistan. Lots of scars, could have had something happened to him previous.

The point is they are all very broken characters. Vince Vaughan, the criminal, seems to be the only of the 4 that isn't broken.

The show isn't supposed to tell you what is going to happen in episode one. It's a detective show. It will unravel slowly, and the intent is for you to guess "who dunnit". Be patient, enjoy the show and try not to rip apart after episode one. I feel some of you will rip on any show just to show how "cool" you are for not liking a show everyone else likes.

Was he giving a "seminar" or does he run the place? I might have missed the piece of him just popping by to do a TED talk, but I assumed he was the "camp leader".

It's his place, but he said he is rarely there any more. I think his exact words were "I still have an office here."

pretty sure he owns or runs the place

he says he still has an office there but isn't around as much as he was

He said he only comes by once in a while to give a lecture. Sounds like he used to run it. Could be he still owns it but he doesn't get involved day to day anymore - at least according not to him.

The character said specifically that it was from before the Army, IIRC.

Not particularly, but it definitely helped. Like some others have said, I felt like the location was a character unto itself.

This is basically my exact feeling on it. Definitely was a nice setup to the characters. We have Colin Farrell, who is a shady cop with ginormous anger/control issues. We have Rachel McAdams who has a great arse and family problems with her whore sister and weird, religious zealot father (David Morse, who I didn't even know was in this). And we have Taylor Kitsch, who is sort of a loner motorcycle cop with erectile dysfunction, a hot Mexican girlfriend(ish), and a deathwish. Then we have Vince Vaughn who is in some sort of organized crime thing, but is venturing into legitimate business (and who employs Colin Farrell at times).

All in all, a solid start/introduction, and now this eyeless corpse dude unites all of the main players and should get the story flowing nicely.

Agreed. For a creepy murder scene vibe, the Bayou >>> Los Angeles.

At least for an outsider. Hope I'm not offending any Louisianians.

I gotta admit

the scene where all 3 of them were standing there looking around at each other was cheesy as hell

I know they showed that on the trailer but I was hoping that was just a promo shot they did for the trailer
