I don't know if I'm just really tired right now (probably) but the story doesn't seem as tight. It was a little harder to figure out where exactly this is heading. Seems like this episode was almost entirely introductions. Developed a good bit of character. Didn't tell much story.
Thats how I felt after s1 e1, so we are on about the same track. About as fricked up as I'd figured it would be.
Everyone so far, as far as actors, we're solid.
Thought I would have to watch this one twice but finally got around to realizing that this episode was about character introduction and a description of how fricked up each one of them are....
Vince Vaughan is doing a fine job. Someone said earlier, I'm glad he's not a cop. He fits a crime boss/shady type pretty well.

I thought he went and roughed up the reporter that was going to write about the corruption in the city?
Both. Or at least it's implied.

I find, on this board, that this show is so scrutinized and examined so closely like a Les Miles 2nd string QB in a spring game.
It's odd how True Detective is so closely watched. I really don't see this behavior and conversation nit picking on hardly, if any, other show on this board.
To me it shows how either good it is or people just want to be "that guy."

Interesting
Those articles definitely shine a light on where things might be going.

The bully scene made the first episode
It took "Silicon Valley" what, 8 episodes before Erlich threatened to kill and rape the bully's parents?
"True Detective" is on an advanced timeline.

I think it might have something to do with the pseudo philosophical dialogue. It has this perception or presentation of being "smart," so people feel the need to be hyper critical.

Season one's intro was awesome.
S1 started with the victim displayed at the beginning of the episode & the story worked its way around the murder. S2 seems to be the opposite, story works its way to the murder. I noticed the female detective's (sorry don't know hollywood types) father mentions the totem pole at the crazy camp he was preaching at. The car hauling Caspere had what looks like a totem pole character in the front seat of the car.
My first episode prediction: Crazy Camp leader is all tree hugger and shite & doesn't want any of the developments VV is trying to make happen. Girl has to take down her own father.

but they only showed the reporter, right?
i think they said the guy that raped his wife was a low level drug dealer.

Colin's character took care of the rapist offscreen.

Yeah, that's all they showed.
It was just implied in the flash back where Vince Vaughn gave Ferrel the photo of the rapist that Ferrel used it to get his revenge, and that's how Ferrel became indebted to Vaughn.

I really liked the song they used for the opening credits. It's Nick Cave, if I'm not mistaken.
I'd be willing to be T-Bone uses a Hozier song sometime this season. Something like To Be Alone fits the shows vibe.
I thought this episode was damn good and am really looking forward to seeing more.

quote:I have to say that I picked up on some of this while watching other crime dramas. Some of the dialogue in True Detective is eerily similar to other series [Specifically Hannibal]
Pizza lats writing is pretty overrated. Some very heavy handed dialogue and clichéd characters but the direction and acting made the most of it.

I couldn't tell if Vince had taken care of the Rapist for him or just gave him the info to find him.
Looks like the motorcycle cop could be gay?
Several other things confused me but can't remember everything right now
Eta: also thought the chick he was banging may have been the missing girl from the foreclosure people

I'm not sure about this either.

He has PTSD. He was in the military. Apparently it gives him performance issues.

Yeah, I guess now that the writers live in LA they caught word of this Vernon town which is a fricked up industrial town that is basically inside Los Angeles. I'm unclear as to how this involves the HSR, since it probably wouldn't stop there. Maybe this is where the remote towns in central cali (outside of Fresno) come into play.
