For sure, Sam, for sure. That was my reaction too. She was pretty much doing the "this is the way men are, stand by your man" talk.
I think the weirdly-placed scene at Maggie's parent's lake/river house is the key to the whole damn show.

Rust allowed this case to swallow him. He dug too deep + this caused him to go off the grid. He's been trying to solve the case, and I believe he has a general idea of who the yellow king is, but for some reason he can't solve the case.
And the investigations pinning the case on Rust is just a decoy by the writers. The investigators don't have too much to go on after the new murder + Rust is an easy target because of how he lead the earlier investigation + randomly went off the grid for years.

I think the general consensus is that someone high up is setting up Rust...probably because he is getting too close to the truth. He went off the grid because he likely realized people within the Dept were at some level involved.

It is very interesting they chose LSD as the drug of choice for several reasons.
1. You don't really make any money off acid. Of course you make some profit, but nothing compared to anything else. I'd say it is the least profitable drug out there in terms of cash flow.
2. Rust's dialogue throughout the series echoes one who has experimented with psychedelics and has perhaps even "broken through to the other side."
3. Reggie Ledoux's speech during his last few minutes on earth definitely sound like someone in the middle of a trip. He has similar ideas as Rust, particularly in regards to the theory of time.
4. During the breakout of acid in California during the late '60s it was widely known that cult leader Charles Manson and his followers would take heroic doses.
