A major point I disagree with the Grantland article on is his criticism of how the Dora Lange case has taken a backseat to the story of Rust and Marty. I'm not sure why he views this as a negative. If the show was actually about the murder, HBO would have never made it and it certainly wouldn't have had Matt and Woody be in it.

The show's story was never about the case. The case is the vehicle to carry the story of Rust and Marty similar to the Apocalypse Now journey up river being that vehicle to carry the true story.

I wouldn't say that the story is not about the case at all but yes I agree that the primary storyline is Rust and Marty's interaction and later devolution for reasons we discover along the way.

Exactly. That's my issue with the grantland criticism. I get having a couple of issues with the show, but I honestly don't think he got what the show was trying to do and now he's just sticking to his guns bc he doesn't want to admit he missed the whole point of the show.

Yeah, without reading the article, it looks like Greenwald came into it expecting Law & Order: HBO and refuses to adjust his expectations.

Been wondering if the show might touch upon something like this

quote:

Published: May 25, 2005

PONCHATOULA, La., May 24 - Two decades ago, Hosanna Church was one of the fastest growing congregations in the cypress flats of Tangipahoa Parish on Lake Pontchartrain's northwest rim, and its pastor, Louis Lamonica, was a beloved figure.

"That man could really preach," said Bill McCormack, a resident of Ponchatoula who attended the church as a boy. "He was an awesome local icon."

But by two years ago, when the church finally closed after a ferocious falling-out between the pastor's son and successor, Louis Lamonica Jr., and his family, the congregation that once neared 1,000 had dwindled to 10 or 15 troubled souls from a handful of families.

And now, many of them, including Louis Lamonica Jr. and a deputy sheriff who once lived on the church grounds, are behind bars, accused by the police of a litany of ungodly offenses, including sexual abuse of perhaps two dozen children and the mutilations of cats for satanic rituals.

doesn't sound plausible.

I think the cops know his history of killing perps int eh past in his undercover days..It may be that in their raid of Ledoux's place, they actually kill him…when a new murder surfaces 17 years later, they black detectives are going back to see where the original detectives may have missed something..they may find the connection to the iron crusaders with Rust and think maybe he was using the case to settle a personal vendetta, hence killing Reggie.

I think it would be silly if they really think Rust was the killer.
At this point in the show it really sounds stupid to be so sure of your assumptions. I dont see how yall can sit here and debate what you dont know. It would ruin the show for me. Just watch it for what it is.

I can remember when that story broke on the OT Lounge.

Funny thing, that church building has housed some crazy stuff or carzy things happened through the years. Someone spray painted a pentagram on front facade. It was about every denomination. It use to be a pentacostal school. But it seemed like every 3 or so years that church changed to something else. real bizarre.

Do big cities commonly have helicopters keeping a watch a ghettos?

I too thought they were trailing the SUV before the B&E. However, I attributed this to maybe some FED or TX law enforcement surveilling the bikers. Don't know if that's what's up or how it will tie in though.

And did anyone else thing that Charlie Lange while not directly involved in the culty stuff, could have "given" them Dorie bc he was pissed and knew they would kill her? And then he drops all kinds of clues in their first interview as to who killed her. Maybe Charlie Lange is the real mastermind here: (i) take out ex wife in excruciating fashion (ii) get revenge on manbeast that buttraped you for a spell (iii) take down weirdo rich guys (iv) ??? (v) profit.

And, I'm beginning to think the "True Detective" is meant to be the viewer.

I actually agree with a lot of the Grantland article. I do think this show is very good and is amazing in parts. My main issue with last night's episode was how quickly these two so called "detectives" completely went rogue. The whole entire scheme just to find one man who might be the serial killer, while very entertaining, seems over the top to me. But hey, that's art.

Rust has spent years as a narco undercover and Marty isn't exactly a stable man at this point in the show. If you remember when they were talking about this plan and Marty was worrying about Maggie, he asks rust what he thinks Maggie is gonna do and he gives him a "positive answer" saying that he sees them back together in a few months. IMO he just said that so Marty would get on board with him and so he would stop worrying about Maggie so much

Marty didn't really "go undercover" except when he walked in the bar when he wasn't supposed too. All he did was trail rust

And it's not just about 1 serial killer now. After the Charlie Lange interview they find out it's a whole lot bigger than just 1 person

I remember when all of that was happening. I just couldn't believe it. I still don't see how someone can let themselves sink to that level.

A friend pointed out something today that I didn't notice when watching last night. Was the helicopter circling the ghetto as Rust and Ginger first arrived? What was up with that?

The chopper was there initially yes. Noticed it on my rewatch.

The circling helicopter isn't unusual in known trafficking areas (ie the projects). I lived in Los Angeles for 10 years and the ghetto bird had as many patrol routes through south central ,east La etc , as car patrols.

yeah I don't know how big Beaumont is. South Central LA is like a little city though. I'm of the opinion that the copter was a non issue on the account of it never significantly spotlighting the car, and leaving the scene pretty abruptly as they arrived.

Rust was awesome in the B&E scene. Total undercover mode not wanting things to escalate and protecting the kid. Then when things go FUBAR he snags the primary and GTFO.

Am I alone thinking this is MM at his best?
