I was watching Wizard Of Oz earlier and I think it be hard to leave this movie off any top list. It still resonates today. Casablanca could also be on this list.

Gone with the Wind has to be on the list.
Highest grossing movie forever even without inflation.
Still the highest technically adjusted for inflation.
Even though they never adjust for population booms.
And the movie was made in 1939...and looks like it was made 20 years later at least.
Look at the movies that were nominated with it. It's like night and day.
Gone with the Wind was nominated for Best Picture with Stagecoach...now I love Stagecoach but it looks like it was made in 1931 compared to GWTW. There's this Nickelodean sheen on the film...as if you had to crank a wheel to keep it playing.
This was Jimmy Cagney era...black and white, small stage and GWTW comes out of nowhere with this grand color epic.
1939 Oscars show 8 nominees living in the past and 2 moving forward...Wizard and GWTW making a giant leap forward.

But that's why it's one of the best. It was technically a silly arse retarded movie. But it's still a classic.

Top five is tough. You have to cover a lot of ground and there are a lot of movies worthy to be in the conversation. Wizard of Oz is up there. Gone With the Wind would have to be in IMO.
I’d have to say that Godfather, Star Wars, Sound of Music, The Philadelphia Story, 12 Angry Men and It’s a Wonderful Life would be in the conversation as well.

Star Wars was an instant hit because much like GWTW, in 1978 nobody had seen anything like it from an effects and cinematography perspective.

To be iconic the movie has to resonate far beyond just hardcore movie fans. Even though I love it and it's one of my favorites, 12 Angry Men wouldn't get recognized by 3 out of a hundred people if you just walked up and down the street of a big city asking them about movies. Same with Philadelphia Story. Truly iconic movies define a genre and get stuck in the public consciousness for generations.
The Godfather - THE American crime story. Even influenced how Mobsters act.
Jaws - the first major summer blockbuster. Still the best "big scary" creature in cinematic history
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly - as much as it pains me not to include a John Wayne movie as the iconic Western I don't think any one movie of his has resonated with the general public as this Leone/Eastwood classic. Both celebrated and deconstructed the western.
Star Wars - even though the majority of the Star Wars output following the original has (to be kind) been mediocre at best, there's no doubt that when you mention sci-fi movies to the casual movie-goer that the first title that pops to mind is Star Wars.
The Sound of Music/Aladdin - cheating here.
Sound of Music is still the quintessential holiday/family/musical entertainment movie after 50+ year.
Aladdin was the blockbuster movie that signalled the resurgence of animation as financially lucrative art form. All the ensuing Disney/Pixar hits owe a ton to Alladin.

Why are all wizard of oz remakes, reboots, and spinoffs bad? Because the original was also bad.

Gone With the Wind (romance/history)
Once Upon a Time in the West (western)
The Godfather (drama)
Halloween (horror)
Toy Story (animated)
Kind of grabbed one from each era and genre as best I could. Also gave Seven Samurai a lot of thought.

I don't know about a top 5, but It's a Wonderful Life is great.
