Truly iconic movies define a genre and get stuck in the public consciousness for generations.
Hard to narrow genres to five but using the stuck in the public's consciousness criteria and discounting hard core movie buffs, maybe these five.
The Godfather
Gone With The Wind
Singing In The Rain or The Sound Of Music
White Christmas
It's A Wonderful Life

Gone With the Wind (romance/history)
Once Upon a Time in the West (western)
The Godfather (drama)
Halloween (horror)
Toy Story (animated)
Sadly, Idk know if this is that huge with the general public.
But it seems the general public knows High Noon. It's Grace Kelly and Gary Cooper.
High Noon is probably the most iconic Western in the general sense over Good, Bad, Ugly and Once Upon a Time.
War movie is the most difficult.
Seen them all, and even though not a big fan...Apocalypse Now just jumps out.

You’re probably right about BATB vs Alladin. I just remember Alladin so much more because my kids wore that movie out whenthey were little and we had the VHS.

Hmmm....I’m going to make a personal definition of ‘timeless’ and say it means: Movies that I can pull quotes from despite not being alive or of memory forming age when they came out.
In that case I have
1) Wizard of Oz
2) Blazing Saddles
3) Airplane!
4) Planet of the Apes
5) Operation Petticoat
Yeah, I’m partial to comedies.

Star Wars - broad appeal Scifi into public consciousness
Wizard of Oz - one of the most famous/highest grossing movies ever that was groundbreaking for color, cinematography, and story
The Godfather - quintessential American cinema classic
Blazing Saddles - attack every aspect of censorship and pc culture before its time
One Night in Paris - this movie literally transformed pop culture and started the entire decline of female role models, the extreme rise of the amateur porn industry , the explosion of teen slut culture, and showed everyone that an excellent blow job but average sex is still awesome and you don't need anal or the kama sutra to enjoy it. Everyone saw it. Everyone talked about it. It changed American society for the worse. It wins out over Pam Anderson, because Anderson was already famous and slutty and much lower production value. One night in Paris started the trend of being famous for being a talentless slut. You can site it for everything from the rise of reality TV to the destruction of the innocence of youth en masse.
