1. The Exorcist
2. The Shining
3. Halloween
4. The Omen
5. Salem's Lot

I need to do a rewatch on Salem's Lot to see if it holds up. There are a lot of them that I thought were scary at the time that just seem silly now (Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th).

There are some scenes that deserve mention. Rosemary's Baby wasn't that scary, but the "bitten by a mouse" sequence was surreal and disturbing. The Ring was good, particularly the "Whoah, that bitch came out of the TV!" part and the video in the movie was creepy as hell. Alien is still suspenseful, but not as good as I remembered it. Night of the Living Dead was good, too, and is iconic enough to be on the list.

I feel like the Exorcist, The Omen, & The Exorcism of Emily Rose should be in the top five.

Jaws (for its time) should be top 5

I wouldn't qualify Jaws or Aliens as horror movies. They are movies that have gore/horror elements to them.

FWIW Jaws is one of the best movies of all time and better than most of the movies listed here.

The Descent scared me more than any movie on any of these lists, The Thing would be #2

That's the tough thing about horror. If we're talking about ANY film that contains horror, then my list is much different and much bigger (and I feel bad enough for putting The Thing on there, it's also borderline horror, but it deserves to be on every list it can).

Horror is just a great genre, with very very large gaps in quality. It might have the most "bad" films, but have any films, outside of a select few, affected culture itself as much as Nosferatu, Frankenstein, Dracula, Psycho, Jaws, etc.?
