Anyone else start this yet? Just dropped on HBO and I’m already hooked. Amazing Japanese culture, Yakuza conspiracies, and some SEC representation ala Zou? Loved the first 3 episodes and can’t wait until Thursday for the next ones!

Also the main actor is crushing it with his Japanese speech & adopted mannerisms of someone clearly getting used to a new country.

quote:

Tokyo Vice is a crime thriller about an American reporter who becomes the first non-Japanese journalist to work for a major Tokyo newspaper. With the help of a police detective, he then begins to see the real face of Tokyo as he investigates the reach and influence of the yakuza.

I watched the first two episodes Friday and so far not too bad. It does seem pretty stylish and well done. I'll probably keep watching and hope it doesn't run out of steam like so many shows over on Netflix tend to do.

Like you said the glimpse at Japanese culture is very interesting, that's probably what I'm liking the most so far

A little spoiler from the first three episodes.

I think there is a sub-plot brewing with Samantha and Eimi. Eimi seems to be somewhat interested in a potential serial killer who is targeting women in Tokyo. She asks Jake to look into it while they are at the office but their conversation is interrupted when the phone rings and isn't broached again. When we see her cooking dinner for her husband, there are crime scene photographs of dead women on the kitchen counter. And now we have a very sophisticated client of Samantha's stalking her and taking photographs of her from rooftops.

The Japanese did a pretty thorough job of crushing the Yakuza back in the early 2000s. There was a prolonged gunfight involving a dozen rival Yakuza with uzis in broad daylight that shocked the public so much the government put the hammer down. Yakuza are treated like outcasts now, and although there are still thousands of members, their influence is a mere fraction of what it was two decades ago.

You might also enjoy Giri/Haji from a few years back on the same service. Bounced between London and Tokyo

I'm enjoying it, but I may wait for the rest of the episodes to pile up and then binge it.

I've always been enthralled by Japanese culture; samurai, shoguns, Yakuza, you name it. Plus this show is a Michael Mann thing? shite, the first episode sucked me right in.

I guess I should mention that they gained a lot of public support back by the way they helped out after that tsunami back in 2000whatever.

Definitely have a bias because I loved spending time in Japan in the early 2000’s and the noir/neo-noir genres is one of my favorites when it comes to tv series, that being said it’s been great so far.

Only watched the first 2 episodes because I would rather wait and binge the rest in one weekend. Love the characters, I’m so-so on all of the zoom shots, wish they had more scenes involving food.

The “buy me drink girls” is truly genuine along with the arcade and other things.

watched a couple of episodes and easy to watch and digest. Holy crap though even with a camera crew following Americans would never let there 2 year old near a highway like episode 1.

I disagree. I think it is great.

Breaking bad or sopranos good? Of course not.

But the episodes have me wanting more - in a good way.

After reading this thread, I think I'll wait for the season to end before watching, so I can binge it in totality.

I watched the three Outrage movies about the Yakuza on Prime recently and really enjoyed them. Watched them in three consecutive nights so it was like watching a mini-series.

Outrage-The Way of the Yakuza
Outrage-CODA
Beyond Outrage
