Man, you can REALLY see the best in people if any part of this movie was inspirational.

I love the movie, the book and all of McCarthy's work, but this is one bleak-arse, depressing story.

Amazing book.

I wanted to like the book so bad, but I just do not like McCarthy's writing style. I powered through for the story, but it was a drudge.

You ain't lying man. The genre of this movie is right down my alley but I have never done a second watch because of how dark it is. Not that I thought it was bad, quite the opposite really, but I just haven't been able to bring myself to revisit that dark of a story a second time

I thought it was a fairly accurate portrayal of human nature the way I perceive it already. I guess that's why I wasn't saddened or depressed by the story.

What I took away from the film was the powerful message about the human spirit, a will to survive, and a father's love for his child.

Same for me. It was when my daughter was about 2 years old and it was a horror story.

Certain movies I could only watch once. Schindlers List. Come and See. Million Dollar Baby. The Road.

I read the book, and it was depressing enough. I'm not gonna watch that movie. I'm sure its good, but I'm at the point in my life where I avoid that subject matter as much as possible.

First of all I really appreciate all the serious, thoughtful replies. This board is well-moderated and knowledgeable.

Secondly, the replies have been illuminating in that I now realize my taste in movies is a bit dark and bleak.

McCarthy at his finest

For those of you considering diving off into his works, be warned that he can be difficult to read if you get distracted easily, and that his subject matter can be really tough. There are no happy endings.

Very good adaptation of McCarthy's work.
Glad they left out the BBQ scene.

I am still blown away that Oprah made this a book for her book club.
And she got to have the rare McCarthy interview for her show.

Josh Brolin talks about becoming friends with McCarthy in real life and spending time together. Worth watching if you get a chance.

I believe that BM will get made and it will be this director that does it.

The Road is one I've always thought about watching but never pulled the trigger on. Just gave off sort of a "long/boring" vibe to me for whatever reason. Am I wrong on that?

Totally agree. I think I finished the book in tears. It was so good I never wanted to watch the movie.

You should read the book. Cormac McCarthy books are pretty good.

They can be difficult to follow initially. He doesn’t use quotes so at first you may not know if someone is speaking or who they’re speaking to. You get used to it after a while though.

I’d also recommend All The Pretty Horses for those interested in reading McCarthy.

The Road is very bleak though. Once I finished that book, one of my first thoughts was….”if society ever gets to that point, I’m out.”

Definitely the most difficult part of starting out reading his stuff.

I was hesitant to pick this one up because of the shitty Matt Damon movie, but there are passages that are on a par with any poetry ever written. I was astounded that the guy that gave me such despair could write something that soared so high.

I don't recall feeling either of those things. Mostly anxiety, discomfort and despair...but never bored.
