We watched the first two Monday night, then the last 5 last night. We couldn't stop watching. Just a very good show.

I'm always fascinated by people who are geniuses but also have substance abuse problems. I think it reminds me of myself in some ways.

I never know how to read tM/TV and it is about a fictional woman doing well in a "men's endeavor" but I really enjoyed it.

It barely touched on the whole women in a mans game aspect. it was mentioned a few times but wasn't central to the plot at all. For me it was a movie about a chess prodigy who struggled with addiction and a shitty childhood. The story would have worked just as well with a male child her being a female was just an added spice that enhanced the story without overpowering it. Extremely Well done and no need for a follow up. They told a complete and finished story with that series.

Stephen King approves:

I've watched a lot of TV during this cursed year--I know I'm not alone--and the best of the best is THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT, on Netflix. Utterly thrilling. I thought nothing would beat THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO SEVEN, but this does

Also, this chess "FIDE Master" (3rd highest rank) is reviewing the chess played in the show, episode-by-episode. I've watched the review of Episode 1, and it's pretty interesting. There are spoilers so watch the episode first.

I thought it really touched on the depressed housewife living in a society that has defined roles for them and they're all getting prescribed tranquilizers by their husbands in the 50's and 60's - this was a real thing and called the housewife epidemic...it was normal to drug up your wife by taking her to the doctor if she wasn't happy.

You saw it with Harmon's birth Mom and her adopted Mom. ..and both were abandoned by the father of their child.

I think the show didn't know enough about the history of women in chess and maybe there weren't many back then...so they used the two mothers to explain the chess world that it was a man's world in society. And by showing the struggles of Harmon's two Mom's it in turn set-up what Harmon was going against.

I wonder if he'll touch on all the games at the World Championship at the end...where there's always a winner and never multiple games of draws between opponents.

Obviously that's totally for TV but they could've mentioned that they play more than one game against an opponent. During that period the quarterfinals and semifinals were best of 10 games and the final was best of 12 games.

I thought it was excellent. I watched it over two days and was sad when it was over.

yeah, im the furthest thing from a chess expert but the lack of mentioning draws was noticeable. i think like once or twice they mentioned someone else drawing in a tournament, but it was far different than real tournaments. i agree that it was the better option for a television show, though. im not interested in harmon drawing benny watts or the russian.

But it's still an excellent show. Because it's really not about chess but her.

Spoilers I guess...

I just would've liked at least in the final, they played to some draws and it actually might've been more interesting for the finale.

"We're deadlocked at 2 games a piece and 6 draws...the tension is growing." You can montage that shite like any other movie.

I don't know but the entire show seemed every chess match was a one-off which isn't the case.

Absolutely smashing. Best damn show I've seen in a while. Looks like the lead actress Anya has been in some other well received films and series as well.

I've got one episode left that I'll likely watch tonight, but this is an incredible show. The cinematography, the music, the characters, the acting - everything has been outstanding. I didn't really care for the guy moving in with her to train her storyline, but perhaps the last episode puts that angle more into context.

You mean Dudley from Harry Potter?

I found it interesting that two of the male characters were British actors playing Americans. Makes it more interesting knowing they had to not only act, but come up with an accent.

This was probably two episodes too long, but was still very very good

I think Jolene was my favorite character. True friend.

I watched this over the weekend and loved it. This is one of the best shows Netflix has made in awhile. And it got me fired up about chess again! I was once infatuated with the game.
