My only issue with the show is I found the pacing to be very inconsistent and often distracting. I don't have a specific example, but I thought it was very noticeable.

Only episode/plot line I had a problem with was the episode where Harry moved in with her. That was a really slow episode, and I struggled finding a compelling reason for that part of the story. They took a whole episode to show she couldn’t form meaningful relationships with people.

Yeah, I think it was more for my watch. It felt like FF then SP, the show could have been 5eps or 10 eps, but settled on 7eps. It was just the flow for me. But that's just a style complaint. I enjoy both slow burn/fast, but in context.

I recommend the show, I'm just being critical because I think they could have expanded on some areas and/or condensed others.

Totally agree, that was sort of "where is this going" boring.

Because you just kept thinking, he's just trying to bang her and she's totally uninterested...and then he sort of begs and she treats him like a puppy and gives in.

1. Show is painfully slow sometimes.

It probably should have been just 5 seasons, max.

They use the "OMG I'm so surprised by that move" trope way too much. Great players are very rarely surprised by some amazing tactic. Sure it does happen (and happened more in those days than today) but games with magical combinations are not the norm. Games between two great players are usually slow positional slogs where one side gains a very small advantage and just sorta strangles the other player slowly with it.

Yea that’s what we all want to watch, slow slogging chess

I think 1 season is enough.

They make her way too weird and awkward as a child, she doesn't come across as a gifted girl with problems she comes across as the most autistic person to have ever lived. Her personality as a teen is much more believable.

You’re kind of glazing over the fact that she’s in an orphanage, along with how she got there, aren’t you?

She comes across as damaged, which is the entire point. I don’t imagine young orphans with benzo addictions are well-adjusted, so to speak.

Her biological mom was also highly intelligent with some mental issues of her own. I didn't find Beth's behavior at any point in the series to be inaccurate.

Just finished it last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The lead actress is insanely hot in this.

Also didn’t realize the cowboy chess player was Jojen from Thrones

I didn’t find her too attractive, which I think actually played better in my brain. She’s certainly not ugly though.

Ah I was wondering, he looked familiar.

The SO said her head was shaped like Sid the Sloth and I can’t get it out of my head.

Spoilers:

I love that Borgov, the big-bad ended up being a humble and respectful competitor. It could've easily gotten trope-y with the big unbeaten Russian champion being an evil a-hole.

Also thought it was hilarious that Beth ended up single with a simp army behind her.

Finished it up last night, and agree with all of the praise in this thread. Was just quality start to finish.

I liked that Beth was a complex character, and they didn't try to fit her into one of the strong female lead tropes where she used sex/her body to awe men and get her way or make her into a controlling a-hole. It was refreshing to see her character have depth and deal with issues like loss, addiction, success, and disappointment in a real way, something that honestly film/TV usually does a terrible job of when it comes to female leads.

It was refreshing to see the show avoid a lot of traps. I kept expecting the evil orphanage women or the adopted mother from hell.

So many other shows would have taken the easy way and made her life worse than it already was. We didn’t need it. Hell most of the people in the show were trying to help but she couldn’t get over her own

It was so good. Couldn’t sleep and finished all last night.

How they made a show about chess exciting is beyond me. I was glued to the TV.
