I don't know if it's been talked about, but when Murph sends the message about Brand's death, they had to have purposely set that scene to make you think TARS was gonna cut the 2nd half off, right?

I was expecting a HAL/Ash backstab. Good filming.

Was the world in such bad shape that Coop had to leave in such short notice? Another few weeks or even months with his family would have been irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

In all likelihood, yes. The orbits were alligned for them to get to Saturn, and it could be 10 or so more years when they could sling off Mars again towards Saturn. It's not like the moon where we can take off whenever. Going to other planets have to be carefully calculated and very timely to make them. One day off could be disaster for the entire mission.

Also, why did Coop send the same messages and do the exact same things he knew he would ignore? Seemed kinda odd.

i thought the exact same thing, but remember he realizes that only after he sends her the message(as a child) and goes to present age to tell her what to do.

If you're reading through this thread and haven't seen it yet, I'm afraid it will ruin a lot for you.

I saw it Friday night, with some friends. I thought it was a brilliant film and loved how it was an obvious homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey. I feel it is better than 2001. Amazing film, I will see it again with my gf soon.

It's not that he sent the same message. He sent the message.

Exactly. The earlier messages all led up to his sending of the gravity equation. He had to send those messages to save her life and humanity.

You could always bring up the movie time travel paradox.

If he hadn't sent the original messages, he wouldn't have gone and been able to save the world. He realized that while in the bookcase dimension.

I was expecting that as well. Telling us that the robots had a history of going rogue, making TARS and KIPP resemble the monolith, the intelligent computer/robot conversing with the crew, they were setting us up the entire time.

They even had Murph lean forward to turn it off and then stop to ask if they knew it was a lie. It was set up to be a cutoff point.

Oh, Nolan, you wily sumbitch.

Have we discussed how big of a pussy Coops son turned into? Dude was so bigger towards the end for being the old mature kid when his dad left.

My wife even said the same thing at the movie - "She's not going to get the whole message."

She couldn't trust the robots until the end.

LINK

The above is a link to the audio from the dramatic docking scene at the close of the film's second act.

Brand: What are you doing?
Cooper: Docking.
TARS: The Endurance's rotation is 67....68 RPMs.
Cooper: Alright. Get ready to match our spin. Retro thrusters.
TARS: That's not possible.
Cooper: No. It's necessary.

What I loved about this film the most is that it is the exact opposite from 2001. While Stanley Kubrick takes a fatalistic stance on technology, Christopher Nolan takes the exact opposite approach. Interstellar is an ode to the human spirit. It is that age old, but often forgotten, message that we are indeed limitless beings who, if minds are put together, can achieve anything. The above link is a microcosm of that belief. When TARS tells Cooper that what he is trying to do is impossible, Cooper simply responds: "No. It's necessary."

Absolutely loved that scene. I wish there was more scenes like that in the movie. Also, Zimmer is the fricking king of movie scores.

I really didn't need all of these details. And it being "Anytown USA" opens it up to be accessible by audiences anywhere.

If they wanted to set it in New York I think that they would've used more than the Yankees as a reference.
I can see both sides of it, but in a movie where so much is on the line, I just wish we could have seen things from the entire worlds perspective.

Give me an original phrase before you accuse me of pretention

This may be a few days late.... but you do realize that at this point there really isn't an original thought. Everything we say and think is put there from the the experiences we have, whether that be from reading or from talking with others. So actually you're the pretentious dumbass thinking he has his own original thought.

Eta: Interstellar was

I loved every minute of it. And like a few others have stated, the last few minutes gets a little odd. But overall, it was one of the best experiences I've ever had.

For those questioning the casting, I thought everyone was reasonably well cast.

14 pages since this morning.

I would respond, but I assume we're past all that. No need to bring it up.

Still a really good movie, recency bias is pretty strong with Nolan films though.
