How about that The Master was an incredibly divisive film even before we got to its politics, mainly because the art film clan loves PT Anderson and those of us who like coherent storytelling hate his guts.

The Dark Knight will be the film people always remember from 2008. You can laugh and call me a homer but it's 100% the truth.

I put my money on Avengers.

Edit: I meant this year. When people look back at this year this will be the one most people remember.

The Avengers didn't come out in 2008.

I still think Toy Story 3 was the best film of 2010.

Phoenix didn't win because of politics? Really? An impenetrable, self-indulgent film didn't win an Oscar and you think its politics? How about that The Master was an incredibly divisive film even before we got to its politics, mainly because the art film clan loves PT Anderson and those of us who like coherent storytelling hate his guts.

PT Anderson makes films so insufferable, I actually prefer the OTHER Anderson, who I'm kind of notorious for disliking. Amy Adams is perhaps my favorite actress, and I was rooting against her this year just because I hate The Master that much.

you're talking about the wrong politics. I'm talking about the comments he made about the Oscars several months ago that were completely taken out of context, that ended up costing him the award.

this thread just reminds me why i don't give a flying frick about oscars

i don't get why people get so wrapped up in who the winner is, when they always frick it up b/c an "oscar movie" is a certain type of movie in most cases. it's not the best movie, it's the best "oscar movie"

at least an American movie won best picture again compared to the bullshite that won in the last two years. (The Artist and The King's Speech)

The King's Speech was a great movie. I never understood the hype on The Artist though. Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, it is not. 2011 really was a weak year for movies. I've seen eight of the nine Best Picture nominees and I didn't think any of the movies were even close to Best Picture material.

DDL was considered a lock to win the Oscar before Lincoln even came out. Phoenix wasn't even assured of a nomination. Hell, look at all the other awards... DDL won those too. It wasn't politics. It was that DDL was playing Abraham Lincoln.

Another forgettable film wins BP because of the demographically fragmented voting pool and the fact that they have "good art" awards to begin with.

As long as they use the BP and other categories as a marketing tool, things like this will happen every year.

not true in anyway, shape, or form. Phoenix was the favorite to win the award up until the beginning of December by most critics (including Gold Derby) until that magazine interview came out.

Really? Did you miss Crash or Chicago? Those films blew chunks, and Argo was great.

People basically gave the Oscar to DDL the moment it was announced he would play Lincoln. I assume a lot of people thought it was premature and unfair, but DDL came out and knocked it out of the park. It was well deserved.

Not true at all. DDL won the Oscar the moment he was announced as the lead. Joaquin Phoenix was seen as his only real threat for a time but Daniel Day-Lewis was always the frontrunner.

I'd say Wall-e not getting the nomination was the worse crime. It really should have won the Oscar that year, since its one of the 5 greatest animated films ever made IMO.

I think we can all agree that it was a joke that The Reader got an Oscar nomination for Best Picture over Wall-E and The Dark Knight. I wasn't particularly impressed with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button either. Dark Knight and Wall-E should have gotten the nominations over both those films.
