The reviews are ripping the flash forward scenes. Saying it shows lazy scriptwriting

A spinoff of just Joel and Archie and the club would’ve been awesome

Idk if it’s lazy script writing or if it’s just not serving a purpose other than to show a message the show didn’t seem to care about in any other season or storyline in the show beforehand but is just drubbing us over the heads with it now.
Message being: That Midge was kind of fricked up. Like a lot. She’s not just a shitty mother. She’s kind of a shitbag human being. Immediately only caring about who will take care of their kids (same with Abe and Rose), being a complete bitch about the second waste management thing just cuz she got rejected by Gordon. Couldn’t do two fricking shows to really help out her best fricking friend. Then sticking her foot in her mouth with the guy on the boat who was an a-hole then taking it too far by throwing his coat off the god damn boat. Midge is allowed to have flaws. But they’re REALLY harping on that this season to the point where it’s distracting.
In previous seasons Midge not being able to shut her mouth was written and directed in a way to be endearing, part of her charm and going after what she wants. It was great. But if you take this season and how shitty she’s been and then look back at some of her other moments, it shows them in a way different light. An unnecessary light. Why show the flash forwards at all if it’s just to dampen Midge making it?

Yeah. All they are doing is showing us she is a person we would rather not be around.
Like the subtle ways they show Suzie is doing better. The tailor scene was cool. She earned it.

We still enjoy the snow. Never have liked Suzie. She’s way over the top
Abe and Moise make the show IMO. And I’d nail Rose btw

She didn't stick her foot in her mouth. It all would have been fine if the wind hadn't blown and caused her to drop the coat. She didn't throw the coat over. She absolutely should not have been holding it like she was, but she didn't throw it. And really good for her for taking up for the young girl he was hitting on. The man was more of an arse than Midge. But he was just used to getting away with it.
I don't see it as showing her as a horrible person. I see the flash forwards as showing she became a very successful comic. I think that was the price a woman comic had to pay in the 60s and 70s. You were either a bitch, hated by many or you got pushed around and had to sleep your way to the top.

This episode was actually pretty fine in highlighting the few good traits Midge has but anyone confused or mad about mid-life Midge is fooling themselves.
She was always a shite mother and an egocentric arse. She was just endearing and funny.

I mean that’s debatable. I certainly didn’t see any wind being that strong enough to yank the coat out of her hands. But regardless, she always takes shite too far. She got what she wanted. She got the creepy guy to frick off but it’s never enough for Midge. Anyone else would have been satisfied with just getting this creepy a-hole away from their friend. Not her. Still, it’s not nearly as big of a problem as others.

I don’t see how you can say this while watching her drag her poor son around the god damn hall. She completely misses the point that Ethan misses her and just tries to get him back in his own bed. Like I’ve said before, I’ve loved that Midge has had flaws but I think they’ve ramped that up this season and really showing how self centered, arrogant and just overall shitty she is, even to her best friend she couldn’t even suck it up and do one favor for for 2 nights. Like I’ve said, it’s not that Midge is self centered this season. She always has been. But that and her other flaws are being exaggerated by the writers this season that it’s making me NOT want to pull for her whereas every other season I was.

Listen to the music at the very end of the credits.

I agree with this. Maybe I said it wrong. It's not that she's horrible. She is. But that's still not the first thing I see about her. It's that if you weren't that way, so selfish, etc. you probably didn't make it as a female comic back then. Also, I missed the point that Ehtan misses her. As a working mom, I probably would have been more concerned about getting my kids to sleep in their beds as well. But really, people just didn't think that way back then. In 1960, people weren't concerned about how something affected the kids. They were concerned about the neighbors finding out. I think the show does a good job of sticking to how people thought about things back then. If you weren't there, it's really hard to see things through those eyes.
Also, a reminder that there were plenty of normal housewives who were drunk or zoned out on tranquilizers.
You're completely right about her always taking things too far.

Something just struck me about my 1960s childhood. You have to remember we were taught to "act" nice. Not to actually BE nice. We were taught "not to talk like that to your elders" instead of not to talk like that at all. I could go on and on. We were taught how to be for show. Kids were basically supposed to be seen and not heard and not in the way. Nobody worried about how something would impact their kids.

I really enjoyed this episode and the way they filled in 3 decades of story. I thought it was the finale but seems there are 3 more episodes. Not sure how they will stretch out those.

I was thinking about that, too. They have to show her becoming a star or at least her break out moment. Is it going to be on G. Ford or did they wrap that story up last night?
I am very curious to see where in the timeline they start the next episode.

Watched the first few minutes. Saving rest for tonight. Suzi seems so successful but so miserable.

I was pleased with the Midge, Joel and Suzie character developments. Season one only shows the surface of the three. We sympathize with Midge for being cheated on and left to figure out life as a single mom. We hate Joel for seemingly leaving Midge for superficial reasons. Suzie seems to be a somewhat streetwise and flawed character who can’t catch a break in life. I thought Season 5 revealed each characters growth, true selves, and regression in an interesting manner. I enjoyed it.

That was a great episode. As said, could’ve easily been a show finale. I teared up a little bit when we find out why Joel is in jail and again when they showed Midge’s video to her.
