Just finished, this was way better than I was expecting.

I thought it was great l.

The orc scene was fantastic, thought the dwarves were really well done and enjoyed the actor playing Dorian.

This has potential for sure.

Who or what is the guy falling from the sky?

Is he in the Middle Earth canon or this something made up for the show?

Also why no hobbits in this?

We’re they not around yet in this time period of middle earth?

Hobbits weren’t around really for the 2nd age.

I’m starting episode 2.

It’s better than episode 1. The dwarves may be the best part of the show.

The Harfoots are the Hobbits’ ancestors. From LOTR Wiki:
quote:

The earliest known group of hobbits lived in the Vales of Anduin, in the region of Wilderland between Mirkwood and the Misty Mountains. According to The Lord of the Rings, they forgot any genealogical ties to the "Big People" (Men). At this time, there were three breeds, or tribes, of Hobbits, with different physical characteristics and temperaments: Harfoots, Stoors and Fallohides.

I guess I'm in the tiny minority. While I'm enjoying both shows, I like this one better than HOD up to this point.

And, by the time of The Hobbit, I believe that the majority of the hobbits of the Shire were predominantly of Harfoot ancestry.

It took me a minute to get into this but I think it’s been really good.

I know this won’t be the LOTR trilogy or even close, but it’s very good entertainment

Something I’m genuinely curious about. How limited are they in exploring the universe as written due to limits of rights? I know they can cover The Lord of the Rings itself but not necessarily a whole lot outside of that correct?

From the show runners:
quote:

“We have the rights solely to The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, the appendices, and The Hobbit,” Payne says. “And that is it. We do not have the rights to The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-earth, or any of those other books.” That takes a huge chunk of lore off the table and has left Tolkien fans wondering how this duo plans to tell a Second Age story without access to those materials. “There’s a version of everything we need for the Second Age in the books we have the rights to,” McKay says. “As long as we’re painting within those lines and not egregiously contradicting something we don’t have the rights to, there’s a lot of leeway and room to dramatize and tell some of the best stories that [Tolkien] ever came up with.”

This is Gandalf. No Doubt.

Who else could it be?

Edit: Tom Bombadil?

Wrong age, he should be dead already. Isn’t the show supposed to be second age? I haven’t watched it yet.

Gothmog is 1st age and died there as well. Durin's Bane was also first age but hid according to the lore after Morgoth's defeat for over 5000 years under Moria and was seen again in the 3rd age. Besides Durin's Bane no other Balrogs are mentioned after the 1st age so who knows.

IIRC Thrain 1 found under the Lonely Mountain in the 3rd age so much later.

I still think Mithril but why hide it as much wealth could be made of it.

The other possibilities could be Silmarils which if the Dwarves somehow got a hold of the elves would not be to happy.

I am going with Sauron here. It fits the history somewhat from the books.

Speculation I have seen also mentioned Tilion another Maia.
