100%. The first season is based on the book and S2 and 3 the writers got to do their own thing and its a totally different show.

I started and stopped S1 twice and by the time i finished the series its top 5 all time for me. Its hard to describe but people who love it will know what im talking about, but it just makes you really think about your life and what if's. It will stick with you.

Good show. The last season and the ending sort of sucked tho.

I'm perfectly OK with being clueless for most of the story if the characters are likeable, the plot is interesting, and they stick the landing.

Really considering starting this. IIRC< I watched the pilot episode back when it aired (or shortly thereafter), but never got around to sticking with it. But this is one I've always thought about watching, and after seeing the Lost thread and now this one, I think I may give it another shot. The premise always seemed intriguing to me.

It really is a great show. Like others have said, don't get discouraged if you don't know what the hell is going on.

I've rewatched it I think 3 times and still parts I'm like what the hell is going on. But the story, acting and soundtrack are top notch.

Black Sails and The Leftovers bro, two of the most underrated shows of all time. Both took a couple repeated viewings of the first few episodes and then took the f off.

Watch it all the way through. Season 1 is good. Seasons 2 and 3 are just outstanding.

Several of you mentioned in the Lost thread how The Leftovers was really good.

I just finished the first three episodes.

What
The
frick?

This better be good, because so far it’s just an acid trip.

Possibly my favorite show of all time. Definitely weird, but you have to keep going. The end of season one and season two is an absolute masterpiece.

Plus you get the added bonus over LOST in that you get a good conclusion.

I can’t believe I’m trusting the M/TV board.

Well, at least it’s not the OT.

Awesome. If you actually finish and don't like it, I'll stop my "every single person on the planet needs to watch this show" mentality. If you dont like it, I will change it to "everybody on the planet needs to watch this show and dont listen to tygertyger because there is something wrong with him and he must not like brilliant writing, creative writing, and amazing acting."

That’s the thing. No one knows what the frick is goin on. This is the exact kind of show that makes critics and people who want to seem way smarter than everyone act like that’s why it’s so great.

What? I'm not too smart, and I got it on my first watch fairly easy. It is very weird but by season two you have a pretty good grasp of what's going on. Season one sets up the weird, season two and three just improve on it.

For as confusing a show as this can be, I find that using Reddit, typing in the season and episode, and reading discussion comments helps me to see deeper meaning that is over my head.

Anyways, Leftovers is a top 5 for me. I loved every season.

I'm not in love with the show like some people, but I wanted to repeat what I said in a previous thread, that they absolutely nailed how to make an annoying cult. They harrass you and glare at you and smoke in your face, and won't say anything. So you beat them up and they don't even fight back, making you even more mad!

Don’t bother looking for clues as to why the departure happened.

This is pretty good advice.

It’s more drama than mystery box sci-fi. The show isn’t really about the departure itself, it’s about how the departure affects people.

If you can accept that and take it for what it is, the show is fantastic. The acting is incredible.

Ok, but is it a show that’s so confusing that it’s hard to follow or not enjoyable? I like trying to figure stuff out but don’t want to be just in a confused fog the whole time though.

I watched Black Sails a couple years ago on recommendation from this board. I fricking loved it. Great show.

No. It's not Westworld hard where you really need to read an article explaining each episode (though season 4 has been really good). You get answers throughout.

I like the advice earlier as far as not focusing on why everyone departed. Let the characters focus on that and just let them figure it out. You just enjoy the characters and their struggles/motivations.

Even if it wasn't one of my all time favorites, not understanding things or feeling like you were purposefully being duped would not be a complaint.

I pushed hard on here every time I could for this board to watch it. One of my all time favorites and some of the best character arcs you will ever find. Had it been an HBO show instead of Starz, it would have been a smash hit. Same for The Knick on Cinemark to a lesser degree (I think you can stream it on HBO Max now). That was tragically cut short.

I watched the first 4 or 5 episodes when they originally aired but got bored with it. Years later I kept reading how good it was and started over. It was well worth it. Season 1 was the weakest but still had its payoff. It got MUCH better (and trippy) in the other seasons. Watched it all a couple times. Fantastic series.

OK, I finished season 1 and first two episodes of season 2.

Still total Twilight Zone WTF plots, but at least I see the character developments and like the story so far.
