TDKR didn’t really feel quite right when I walked out of it and I don’t feel it’s aged anywhere near as well as the first two.

I’ve sort of just blamed Ledger’s death with messing up whatever the script was going to be.

yeah Nolan can claim all he wants he had no real plans for #3 but he obviously did some foreshadowing in TDK and had an idea of where he wanted to go. I think after Ledger's death he mostly did TDKR out of obligation (and a frick load of money)and the end result showed on screen.

It would have been a tall order to top TDK regardless but without Ledger's joker, next to impossible.

ETA:
looking at that premier thread...sfp made a good point here

the only problem is it's going to be hard to make a 3rd one. this movie covered so much there is little else to do

this was probably another obstacle for TDKR to overcome

I forgot to mention, Gotham City feels sterile and has no identity in TDK. Batman Begins had a much better aesthetic, idk why Nolan abandoned it. Even the worst of the Batman movies understood Gotham is just as much a main character as Batman is.

I learned from the retro-thread that SFPs takes were shite 15 years ago too.

Not one of my all time favorite movies, but this is one of my all time favorite theater experiences.

In no particular order: Jurassic park when they first pan over to show the dinosaurs around the lake. Braveheart when the two armies violently run into each for the first time. Gladiator when they first entire the arena. And this movie when Heath ledger just takes over.

Just all wow I can’t believe what I’m watching moments.

I moved back home to Ohio briefly from Boston that summer. Had 4 beers and saw dark knight by myself at the piqua mall.

Snuck into stepbrothers after. Helluva double feature.

The best thing about that thread is SFP trying to continuously layout the "reasonable" takes.

I was living in DC. The 'why so serous' campaign was genius, the scene sneak previews were brilliantly done and the movie absolutely delivered. I saw it 4 times and that was the last time I saw a movie more than twice in theaters.

Top 5 movie of all time for me. I saw this like 5 times when it was in the theaters. Greatest movie experience of my life without a question.

The film was good for its time and Ledger was good as Joker, but his performance doesn't hold a candle to how intense Joaquin Pheonix was. Not even close. Pheonix made Ledger's Joker look like a Disney character. And this is coming from someone who saw TDK multiple times when it came out.

This and Jurassic Park are it for me.

The first scene in this movie might be the best of all time and that includes Saving Private Ryan. It was absurdly intense in the theater for the first time.

It holds up better IMO as SPR first scene is great but has started to show some age.

Phoenix’s character is a mentally ill person that dresses like a clown, in a movie about mental illness. It’s not the joker, and it’s not a Batman movie.

Because Dark Knight wasn't a Batman movie, it was a crime movie. And it felt that way. Again, it was essentially a heat homage with costumes.

Nolan clearly didn't want that "comic book" feel to the two sequels kind of like the first one had when it showed Gotham as a slummy old world city.

Dark Knight was basically Chicago crime story with a terribly incoherent final act.

I think Nolan did movies that are most faithful to the comics and old cartoons. I just felt Gotham brought to life in HD for the first time was everything I imagined in my brain it was in real life from comics and cartoons. Can’t say we get that anymore. Nothing wants to be the best most faithful adaptation it can be. I think TDK succeeds greatly in this regard.

You probably don’t realize that Pheonix’s Joker isn’t meant to be some over-the-top criminal mastermind. He’s meant to symbolize what average men go through in society nowadays; guys that are lonely, are barely making it with average jobs, and are hurting on the inside for people to appreciate them and accept them. It’s a deeper and more thoughtful movie than anything Nolan could come up with, and that’s why it’s a classic that will stand the test of time.

So, quite literally, not the joker.

I’m glad you found a movie to make you feel like your mediocre life as a therapist is meaningful.

The way you responded is exactly why the film’s message has so much relevance in today’s society.

I get that he does give Gotham a different look in each of the films. But even though I think you can arguably see a greater visual difference between BB and TDK (particularly with the focus on the narrows in BB), filming both in Chicago made it feel like the same city.

But by moving the majority of the filming to Pittsburgh, with some wider, citywide shots of NYC made it feel like a completely different city. And I don’t think it was really the result of NYC, even though that probably should have been (or maybe it was) more visually noticeable, but it was all the shots in and around Pittsburgh that felt so off. And oddly I probably couldn’t point out why what was specifically different , other than a batcopter shot near the end (think one of the more hilly landscape directly or reflection), but it was still quite obvious for some reason.
