It is cohesive. It's an anthology about death.
Also, how many threads have we had about this movie since it was released? Same thread, same comments every couple of months.

Yes, exactly!
And not just death, but also the meaning of life in view of our mortality.
The western setting for the various vignettes, as is typical of the genre, allows the film maker and audience explore the meaning of life, and morality in general, within a harsh life or death struggle.
It’s actually extremely rewatchable, since it takes several viewings just to get the major theme much less all the intricate details.
Think again about the vignette with the limbless minstrel. He’s reciting some of the greatest prose and poetry ever written, and people are paying a small price to attend. But after a time, they get bored with the profound art and the sideshow master decides to switch to a mindless chicken gag, which is more popular.
And then we remember the poem being read by the minstrel - Ozymandias! Makes you wonder if the Coen’s considered using the opening of Ecclesiastes, “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity”, or would that have been too obvious!
If you watched it and didn’t like it, I suggest you watch it again. It’s possible the most profound movie that has been produced in this generation.

"Harvesters of Souls," The Grim Reapers, etc. People responsible for taking the dead to the afterlife. The stagecoach is Charon. Brilliant movie.

The movie brought “All Gold Canyon” to life beautifully (one of my favorite Jack London stories), and Tom Waits is incredible as the old prospector.

I think some of the initial polarization had to do with how the movie was marketed. I saw I think two trailers for it leading up to it, and had absolutely no idea it was going to be that style of a movie, so I was caught completely off guard. I was hoping and expecting Buster to be part of the whole move so was very thrown off until I understood what was going on.
Absolutely love the movie though.

Really? The first scene I think is the most universally loved part of the movie in general. And I think part of the reason it got some heat, because some people wanted that to just keep going and didn’t like the switch to new stories
I think Meal Ticket was my least favorite, although I think it tells a good story. Just kind of a bummer to revisit.
All the other ones I either enjoyed initially or grew to love after a rewatch or two

Meal ticket was very unsettling. I didn't care for the singing cowboy, but that is not my cup of tea. The table gig was unique but still not my style.
Enjoyed the bank robber, wagon train and stage coach ride...
And of course, President Pierce!!
ETA: Cannibal Donner Party theme does have promise.
