Brutal international number

quote:

Overseas estimates for the Craig Gillespie-directed feature take of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s graphic novel Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, are low-$40Ms, we hear from sources; the pic is opening everywhere except for Belgium and France. Hence, the global opening range is between $80M-$90M+. Previews in North America start at 3 p.m. Thursday. No critical Rotten Tomatoes score yet.

From the very beginning - Siegel/Shuster, 1938 - it’s never been implied that Jor-El’s motives were ever anything other than altruistic. Now this happy horseshite.

It's bad for two big reasons. People love the original mythos including the benevolent and loving father Jor-El.

It sort of obliterates the obvious Superman as Messiah metaphor that isn't very hard to notice (Kal-El is Christ and Jor-El is Jehovah).

Is Gunn's Superman supposed to be son of Satan rebelling against his evil patriarch?

If even the critics are going after it, it must really suck.

The timing of this release was always inadvisable. However, I also have no idea what WB/DC was thinking hiring Craig Gillespie to direct this film. Just looking at the trailers, he stripped away the aesthetic/visual wonder that made WoT iconic in the first place. His resume in general is so, so mediocre.

Whenever Jor-El teaches Kal about who he is and what he stands for in this movie I feel emotional, it’s moving. The same thing for Pa Kent. It’s one of those movies I can rewatch over and over

There isn’t the same epic feel or message to this new DC. Undermining a beloved story dating to the early comics that inspires us to strive for greatness doesn’t sit right with me

As for Supergirl itself, 59% opening RT with critics is bad. they usually fall from that opening number a decent amount

It blows my mind that they put this between TS5 and Minions. Major arrogance from DC and it's gonna bite them in the arse

Variety going in dry

#Supergirl is a “super-horrendous” comic book movie “with the worst script I can remember,” reads Variety’s review from @OwenGleiberman.

James Gunn said he wasn’t going into production on any movie until the script was rock-solid. For that was the overriding problem with the superhero overkill era: the films had lousy scripts, which served as grids for layering visual effects.

Gunn was right to want to take the comic-book genre back to the basics of well-structured screenwriting. So what has he done in his second DC outing? He’s given us a comic-book movie with the worst script I can remember.

Edit - you posted it already

VARIETY going in that dry is shocking

They should’ve done an early March date if it was going to be this year

Not a good sign when the critics don’t care for a female led super hero movie

It's not encouraging (unless you hate DC/superhero movies I guess) that Supergirl's screenwriter is tied to at least three other DC projects. Her writing resume is borderline nonexistent, so the reverence for her from Gunn has me puzzled.

That’s her bio on IMDb

Former actress isn’t she? And attractive, checks out

Ellison will likely step in and stop other projects from this writer. They can't keep her after this

Jahns says it’s the worst comic book movie villain since the start of the cinematic universe era. Lobo basically the only good thing about it

Feminist progressive YouTube shill Grace Randolph called it 'shockingly bad.'

You know you fricked up when even she won't shill for you.

If anyone needed MORE proof that James Gunn was the worst choice to make Superman AND run the entire DCU revival. Absolutely awful. Because all he knows is ONE THING.

Guardians of the Galaxy.
