I used to hate them, but I don't know if it's getting old, the overriding music, or loud sound effects, but I turn them on all the time. It's probably the first one.

i cant enjoy a movie without them anymore
once i realized i was missing about 75% of the dialog, i have never gone back.
there are so many 'under the breath' jokes and things and i feel like i spent the first half of my life missing half of every movie i watched.
esp. w/ kids in the house if the wife and i are up watching a movie after they're in bed at a low volume, you almost 100% have to have subtitles going.
esp. action movies where the music and explosions ARE SO frickING LOUD compared to the dialog, what else can you do? i hate scrambling for the remote every time something happens and the whole house is shaking.
turn it up for the dialog...OH shite..turn it down or mute when an explosion happens...can't frickign hear a thing, turn it back up for the dialog..DAMMIT turn it down again for the loud rap music that just came out of nowhere

I hate them. My wife always has them on and I find myself reading the text instead of listening. Especially bad for comedies where the jokes aren't funny when you read them before they were said.

my other gripe. we tried watching the halo series in 4K HDR on a 75" TV during the day and i had to fricking give up. i couldn't see JACK shite.
tried messing w/ the tv settings but then that fricks up the HDR
movies seem WAY too dark these days for most TVs people have in their homes.
eta and get off my lawn

Same boat, and she has our kids doing this as well. When I watch with them I turn them off and tell them they have to do it the old school way and actually listen to what they are saying

add me to the list of those who used to hate them and now can't do without them.

The only time I don’t want subtitles is for sports.

I noticed this as well.
but on some shows I have to turn them off because they don;t match up well with what is actually being said

Same. I find some things these days they are necessary to turn on, but I always end up turning them back off when swapping to something else.

very annoying

I thought I was just hard of hearing, but I have come to agree with you,
“Sharp Objects” had a horrible sound mix, and it drove me nuts…

I was watching Seal Team the other day.
and the subtitles actually said the opposite of what the character said.
character said something along lines of "sorry, I didn't know that"
subtitles said something to the effect "yeah, I heard that about you"

I only use them when I watch Spanish language shows and not English subtitles I use Spanish ones. I understand Spanish but some accents are harder for me and I can read perfectly in Spanish.
For English content I almost never use them.

I keep them on a good bit now. It’s easy to miss an important detail if the sound is off.

WTH is with the subtitles being on the top for Alien Earth and I can't move them! All the other global settings on the TV work but they just stay up top. Everything else on Disney/Hulu behaves.
First world problems.
Watch Alien Earth, it might be the best installment in the Alien franchise.
I said MIGHT.

Sound mixing is at an all tie low and it's only going ot get worse when they force AI into it.

I used them all the time. But I try to turn them off for scary movies. They will give away some of the scares
I don't used thme for sports either.
