Lando was a shady guy like Han was. Remember, in the ESB he sold out Han and the others to the Empire. I think it's very reasonable.

Saw it for the second time today, and I liked it better than upon first viewing. Certainly couldn't say that for TPM.

I was thinking that also. But hope he is not. No need to keep a family line for every past character.

Seems like his training has been more focused on other things.

I thought it was wrong that he couldn't handle Finn and Rey at first, but then after thinking about it I agree with the the above posts. He's got the lineage and some obvious talent with the force, but I think he's purposely supposed to be an emo, undertrained guy. He's nowhere near Vader's level, and clearly not respected by the general.

OK, finally saw it, and I've got a bunch of thoughts. Sorry if they've been covered in the 97 previous pages. I'm not the world's biggest Star Wars fan, but I'll admit to their nostalgic pull. I thought the prequels were terrible, but they didn't "rape my childhood" or anything silly like that. They were bad, and I moved on. So, with that in mind...

I really, really liked this movie. It was everything I wanted in a Star Wars film.

It's not a great film by any means, but neither are the originals. This is just a really fun space opera. Is it the same plot as the original? YES. That's sort of the point. This is a reboot without calling it a reboot. And considering how badly the Star Wars brand had been tarnished by the truly terrible prequels, this was the best possible decision. Remind people what they loved about Star Wars, and demonstrate you understand what made them great as well. This film can trade on nostalgia because it had to rebuild the mythos, and hit the reset button on the universe.

My favorite bit is how JJ Abrams handled the Kylo Ren backstory. He heard the criticism regarding Star Trek, and actually adjusted in response to it. He didn't go for a cheap shock, which would only be a shock to the audience and no one in the film itself, and instead revealed the fact he's Han and Leia's kid as soon as it becomes relevant, and doesn't treat this as a bombshell. It allows the story to flow from there, instead of just being a cheap moment.

I get the criticism that Rey is a Mary Sue, but you know what? So was Luke. Luke didn't even know about the Force, and he's then using his power to blow up the Death Star by the end of the movie. Sure, he's a bit whiny, but he is immediately the best pilot in the Rebel Alliance. Rey's rapid progression isn't all that different from Luke's in the original, and it is better established in this film. First off, of course she's going to know mechanical systems after spending a lifetime as a scavenger. She's also learned more survival skills as an orphan in the desert than Luke under loving, yet restrictive, foster parents. Also, when Kylo Ren reads her mind (another skill never before hinted at in the universe while we're at it), he mentions islands in the ocean in her dreams... which is where she finds Luke. The film at least hints she's been trained by Luke as a small child, so her having more developed Force powers, submerged in her psyche, is at least within the text of the film.

I also liked that the film not only gives us a reboot of A New Hope, just with slight variation, it is aware of the previous mythos. And then it throws in the development of its Darth Vader analog on the side. It gives him the same exact character arc in 2 hours as a supporting character as it took Lucas to do in the prequels with Anakin as the focus. But it also establishes that he is petulant child who is a bit of a poseur. He's trying to fake that he's Darth Vader and the reason he loses in the end, other than nearly dying from Chewie's crossbow, is that he's never bothered to refine any of his skills, as that would require discipline. His offer to teach Rey is laughable, and it is the moment she finds focus he's never had.

And while the film has some plot contrivances and massive coincidences, I didn't notice during the movie because it had such a wonderfully propulsive force to the action. It didn't dawdle. And for such a long film, it never felt like it.

The movie was a blast. It's the first time I've truly enjoyed a Star Wars film since I was a kid.

Because it is so obvious that it would be insulting to ones intelligence if they had came out and said it.

Except Rey who was sent to the desert to wait for someone to come back and get her.

Because Vader would have force choked him and everyone in his city. It wasn't like he did it for a payday.

I plan on watching it again soon. The first run through had a lot going on and it did jump around some of the time but I absolutely loved it. It's certainly not above criticism but it's a fun movie.

After watching this, I can get the impression we're rebooting back to the original Star Wars, as Baloo noted. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the Jedi/Sith mythos is shelved or discarded, actually. The Force continues to exist, but we can say the Sith ended when the Emperor and Vader died, and so did the Jedi. Luke tried to revive it, but that didn't work.
I don't think it's an accident that Kylo is a Knight of Ren instead of a Sith; I think it may be yet another Force religion. Different emphasis, different training; and now that the Jedi are out of the way, free to step in unopposed. Learning from the Sith mistakes. More about raw chaotic power, less about structure and order.
Notice:
they didn't blow up a planet like Alderaan to send a message, they blew up the seat of the Senate to kick the ant pile.
Ren is way more out of control than Vader was, and yet he shows more amazing power during his outbursts. He might not need to gain more self-control, he might have to become unhinged completely, to release the Dark Side fully.

And you need to fight that in a different way.

Maybe I don't know the lore like I think, but unless Finn ends up having force potential, him wielding the light saber violates canon. I was under the impression only people strong in the force could wield a light saber without cutting their own limbs off because it has no weight on the business end, so normal people couldn't "track" where the blade was during use. But I may be mistaken.

From what I know anyone can wield one but they can't fight with it. I have a feeling Finn, Rey, Kylo and Poe are going to end up all being linked to Luke's defunct Jedi class.
