I wonder if these evil entities was Jack the Ripper in that TOS episode. The way the engineer lady described it reminded me of that entity.

Yes, when she started describing it my first thought was the TOS episode Wolf in the Fold. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they were drawing off of

Spoilers

It was a nice little twist that the crew of the scavenger ship were human even though a couple hints were given before the reveal. I do find it a little strange that the future generations of humans that left on a mission
pre wrap drive were able to accomplish what they did in that period of time.

That was a fun episode, and reminded me of the original series more than many of the other SNW episodes. Reminiscent of “The Doomsday Machine” (and some of the lines in that episode hit differently now, knowing that Kirk had this in his past).

A few minor thoughts:

* The design of the alien ship seemed more “Avengers” than “Star Trek”. Although, I did like the alien suits.

* For the first time that I’ve noticed, Kirk actually reminded me of Shatner’s Kirk at times. Some of the cadences, emphases, etc. That actor finally “clicked” for me - I can see it now.

* The twist at the end seemed unnecessary - I think I would have preferred if they had left it out. Not everything needs an explanation. I like the “strange” new worlds to sometimes remain “strange”.

* For the second episode in a row, the “victory” seemed to happen in the blink of an eye. I was glued to the action, and then suddenly it was “that’s it? It’s over?”

* Pelia’s quarters and junk cracked me up. She’s not only a hoarder, she lugs her hoard around with her. :)

Watched the last episode, which was excellent, everything you would look for in a Star Trek episode.

The episodes are to short. 40 minutes long & that includes the opening & final credits. There's only 10 episodes per season. It would be nice to have more content.

4.5 Vulcans.

Better than other episodes this season where they didnt go anywhere.

I wonder how many of the 8 episodes so far that they haven't gone anywhere.

ETA: I guess they went to the whatever system and to the third planet. However, they didnt actually show anything on that planet, and they went there for 5 seconds as part of the joke.

Not really a fan of this latest episode.

I think the producers and writers may be misinterpreting the popularity of Lower Decks and the warm reception for the novelty episodes of Seasons 1 and 2 for the notion that SNW should be a comedy. The writing in this episode was not good. The tone was not good. The editing even was not great.

Go back and rewatch Season 1. I did recently, and it was not this chucklefest that Season 3 has become.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m cool with the occasional lighthearted episode. Even original series Trek did that, with mixed results.

But this is just… not very good. I want a more serious tone in the majority of episodes.

As soon as I saw Patton Oswalt as a Vulcan on the description box I knew what we were getting with the newest episode.

You never want to be in a situation where you’re not serious enough to be taken seriously or not funny enough to be considered funny.

For Star Trek… I think a good barometer is self-referencing. If you have to rely too much on it for the basis of an episode, you might be headed in the wrong direction.

If someone had never seen the show before and this was their first episode, for example, what would they think? What’s the mission statement for this series? You can’t tell.

i need to watch this show, i only saw the very first episode

about the transporter, its a literal can of worms...i requires complete suspension of belief of everything we know about life, mass and energy. that it is used as a magic trick occasionally shouldnt then be very surprising, nor that the use of that magic is inconsistent. i appreciate the vision of the writers back in the 60's to come up with something like that, but thinking about it any deeper that "thats cool" is a dead end. nothing it purports to do is even remotely possible

Alright… it’s a wrap… the season finale has dropped. Without being too spoilery…

I liked it mainly because it wasn’t a cliffhanger and it allowed a graceful exit for a character.

The mechanics of getting to that point seemed a little stretchy plot-wise. But that’s Star Trek. The end does set up (hopefully) more of what it seems most people want (exploration) with this series.

On the whole, this season was the weakest of the three seasons - waaaay too self-indulgent and self-referencing, and a clear tonal shift from what many liked in season 1.

I started the season fired up about SNW, but it ended with a whimper. I think this thread reflects that. There was zero discussion at all about a decent episode 9 in this season after a straight awful (in my opinion) episode 8.

Hoping they can get the ship turned around for season 4!

I have liked a lot of the stories, but I think they did a little too much light-hearted stuff this season.

One of the things I continue to dislike is the ongoing on/off love affairs for Spock (as they make him a bit too emotional) and, by extension, the "warrior doctor" writing for Nurse Chappell. Her role greatly overlaps M'Benga's far too much and far too often.

Fan fiction is littered with transporter fixes that would make the majority of the real Star Trek plots unnecessary. Crew member terminally ill? Retrieve their previous data from the transporter and rematerialize them in their earlier, healthy form. Hell, if someone dies, just reprogram the transporter to take in some similar life form and spit out the younger version of the dead crew member.

We know it can buffer indefinitely, make two Rykers out of one, combine Tuvok and Neelix into Tuvix... anything is possible.

I found this S3 Finale somewhat lackluster. It wasn't bad but it wasn't memorable either. The only memorable item was the building of Kirk and Spock's lifelong friendship.

Oh buddy, how much time you got.

Lighthearted episodes were part and parcel of TNG. Part of the charm. You can do two or three or even four a season when you're getting a minimum of 26 episodes every year.

But in today's age where we are fricked with getting 10, sometimes only 8 episodes every two or three years, then yeah, don't waste my time with more than 47 minutes or lighthearted, silly shite. I'll give you 1 episode a season, after that I'm just going to get irritated with it.

It's amazing that people don't realize OG Star Trek was canceled prior to two seasons.

I was a 70s/80s child and OG ST was canceled way before then.
